I started marketing on the
internet before it was cool. Back in early
1996, the "commercial internet" was just beginning to fully emerge.Now that I've carved out a niche for myself, I pride myself in being
able to help others find their own way. After all, cyberspace can be
a bit intimidating, especially for newbies.
Well, newbies, this article is dedicated to you!
Among the hundreds of email messages I receive daily, one is a
constant. It goes something like this "Jim, I really want to build a
business on the internet, just like you have. Can you give me some
advice to get me started in the right direction?"
Yes. I can. My best advice is this Get your own product or
service! The very best way to make money, either online or off,
is to market your own product or service.
I can hear some of you now, "So that's the Big Secret, Jim?"
That's right! How many times have you come across this advice?
Be honest. Not too often, I'll bet. Why not? Well, let's just say it
is one of the better kept secrets among successful entrepreneurs.
Why encourage others to create competition? It's just not done.
What's more, with all the reseller programs online, businesses want
you selling THEIR stuff and making money for THEM.
As most of you know however, I shoot from the hip. I realize there
is enough room for thousands (if not millions) more products and
services in cyberspace. Hey, I offer reseller programs of my own.
(Click the book cover on the left!) I wouldn't shoot myself in the
foot! The fact is, reseller programs CAN be a good source of
income in cyberspace. (I'll get into that in a minute.) But, there is
NO substitute for YOUR OWN product or service. Here are the
best two reasons why...
1. Marketing your own product or service gives you complete
control. You'll never have to worry about supply or pricing.
You control every aspect.
2. You maximize your profits by keeping nearly all of the
money from every sale.
Now, perhaps you already have a product or service in mind for
your online business. If not, here's an idea for you to consider...
During my humble beginnings, I learned that the number one seller
in the world has always been, and always will be - - information.
Not just any information mind you, but specialized information. I
made a decision that I would start my business on this premise. I
set out to come up with the best information about internet
marketing I could offer at a price far below what others were selling
it for. This has always been my business strategy and it will remain
the same until it stops working. (Most likely never.)
Creating your own information products is NOT hard. Everyone
knows something about a particular subject. Whether it is "golfing"
or "model airplane flying", you can easily create your own
information products. Simply take your area of expertise and start
writing down everything you know about it. Think back to
everything you have learned over the years about it. This is the
type of information others want and need. They will pay good
money to save their valuable time and get the facts that you
already know.
Once you have all your facts organized, you simply mold them
into a marketable format such as a manual or audio tape. If you
do not have the time or resources to do this, you can have

Even if you don't want to sell your new information product, it
will make an excellent marketing vehicle. Give free copies away
to your web site visitors. This is a proven marketing tactic used
by some of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world!
Okay, now let's get back to the reseller issue...
"Isn't it possible make money reselling products and service that
other companies produce?" Absolutely. The internet is spawning
all sorts of new software and other types of products. Although
offering YOUR OWN product or service is highly
recommended, you CAN make money selling products for
others, but you must be VERY selective. Only top selling
products and services that fit a certain criteria should even be
considered.
What's the criteria? Well, if the product or service fits the
following categories, it should be considered
1. It must have a large demand. That is, you must be able
to identify a very large group of people who would be
interested in it.
2. You must be able to earn at least 25% of the profits
on anything you sell. There are far too many so-called
opportunities that pay less that 10% to the distributor.
You just cannot sell enough of something at this
commission rate to earn a substantial income.
3. You must be able to become a reseller without shelling
out a large amount of cash. If it looks like it will take you
many sales to earn back your initial investment, you may
want to pass.
I know first-hand that it IS possible to make excellent profits
promoting things that others have developed. Here's an
example. One of the products I sell is software. The
manufacturers set me up with customized versions of their
programs. People simply download the programs at my
web site and try them out. If they like the programs, they
order a registration code from me using their credit card.
After processing the payment, I simply email their registration
code to them and that's it.
That's the beauty of the internet. In addition to being a boiling
pot of new products and services, it makes tasks such as
product delivery nearly free. You won't find anything that easy
in the real world!
So, the moral of this story?... There are many ways to make
money online, but none better than your own product or
service. If you do not already have your own product or
service to market, do not be discouraged. Just get started
right away. Plan to finish it within the next six months or a
year. You may be surprised at what you can accomplish!

My $.02
Use The Power of Suggestion For Better Results
There is no denying the truth. You and I can say it isn't so, but we
are all subject to the power of suggestion. If you are not using this
universal truth, you are losing traffic and business.
The banner makers whose work pops up on our screens as we
browse the Internet know this. While there is a herd mentality
that makes one webmaster follow the lead of others, there is also
business being conducted. None of us would have affiliate
banners up if no one accepted our invitation to click. We suggest
visitors go here or there, and they do.
The affiliate programs understand this. They know that if they
successfully suggest to enough of us that we can make money
working with them, they will make more sales than they can
make alone because we will help them make sales.
Webmasters who offer reciprocal links know this. They seek
out other sites that offer interesting content similar to their own.
They know that when some visitors are done with site X, if
there is a link to site Y, some of those visitors will visit site Y.
Newsletter editors know this. That is why when your site is
mentioned as worthy of a visit for some reason by some editor,
there is a rise in traffic to your site. The power of the editor's
suggestion you visit here or there leads to trading ads with
other editors. They suggest your newsletter or product, and
you suggest theirs. Assuming that there is true value being
offered, both win from this use of the power of suggestion.
Award sites understand this. The giving and getting of awards
is a whole subsection of the Internet. We follow the links
from award sites to see what the award giver thinks, suggests,
is worthy of our time. We also follow the award link back to
the award site to see what others sites have won recognition
from the award giver.
Discussion board and newsnet participants know this. Active
involvement, posting messages with value that answer questions,
carries a suggestion that the message giver knows her/his topic.
This suggestion can lead the message readers to make a visit
the message giver's web site, or encourage the reader to
contact the message giver by email.
Emailers who have a signature in their emails know this. In
every message they send to whomever they communicate with
is the suggestion to follow the link in the signature. It may lead
to a web address or send a message to an autoresponder, but
the reason that information is there is to suggest action by
everyone who reads that email message. (We do not believe
this holds true for the email spammer. He/She only invites
trouble for their ISP/product/service/reputation...But we
save further mean comments for the spammer for some other
time.)
Websites with good content understand this. The whole point
of the Internet is to have traffic come to your site. When you
have value available for your visitors, you encourage them to
return. Your commitment to good content allows visitors to
bookmark your site and to bring others with them.
Web rings know this. The traffic-generating power of the web
ring is the implied suggestion that if you are interested in this
site about subject A, then you will also like that site which is
also about subject A.
Webmasters who offered their visitors the opportunity to
suggest their site to others know this. The traffic from one
visitor becomes traffic from two or more as one friend tells,
or suggests, another visit the site. Like the old hair shampoo
commercial, they tell a friend, who tells another, who tells
another, and so on, and so on.
The power of suggestion is being used all the time online. It
is being used because it works.
How can you harness this power for your own site?
You can use one of more of the techniques above to
increase sales or visits to your page. If you are tired
of being the only visitor to your page, offer value to
your visitors.
Display banners or text links to honest affiliate programs.
Seek out and cultivate reciprocal links with sites like yours.
Start your own newsletter, and seek out win-win trades
with other newsletters with similar content.
Create and give out your own award, or seek out awards
from others.
Put a small bit of information about you/your offer at the
end of every email you send.
Be a helpful participant in discussion groups.
Offer value at your web site. Provide enough content to
be worthy of more visits.
Join a web ring made up of sites that are similar to yours.
Add the ability to let your visitors suggest your site to
their friends. (I know where you can find a simple,
no CGI, no visible banner/links required, free

Using Dirt Cheap Online Market Research To Grow

It pays to be well informed about what is 'hot' with your
prospects and customers, and what is not. Since people usually
buy a product or service for the benefits they expect to get
from it, what's hot with your prospects and customers are things
such as:
*the goals they want to achieve;
*the problems they want to solve.
Market research is - in a nutshell - the process of finding out
what's hot with your prospects and customers (so you can help
them achieve gain or eliminate pain through your existing or
future products or services) and what's not (so you can avoid
spending your energies in unprofitable directions).
Market research is not difficult to conduct, and yields valuable
insight. Such crucial information can show you, among other
things:
*which ideas for potential new products or services have
the greatest likelihood of success;
*how to improve your current products or services so as to
offer better value and encourage satisfied customers to buy
from you again;
*how to appeal to your typical prospect in your marketing
communications;
*the concerns and questions your prospects and customers are
most likely to have, so you can address them - even before they
arise;
*what your customers may dislike about your products/services,
so that you can try to remedy the situation.
Yes, market research can give you all this strategic business
information - and more. As you may know, I'm the author of a
growing list of several 'how-to' information products, all
related to business success, covering topics such as Internet
marketing, Free publicity, Self-publishing, Mail order/Direct
marketing, Catalog marketing, Time management, etc., which I
market online and off.
In relation to my marketing efforts, questions have come up,
such as:
1) Which of my several products are most appealing to
my online prospects?
2) Which headlines generate the greatest response? I've gotten
answers to these questions - and built my prospect and
subscriber lists at the same time - through online market
research.
These tests are very much like tests a direct marketer might use
in direct mailings or print publications with mail order ads. In
traditional direct marketing, many print publications will, for
a fee, allow you to use what is called split-run advertising.
This is where half the circulation of the same issue is printed
with one ad (A), and the other half of the issue is printed with
another ad (B). Each ad is keyed in some way (given a unique
identifier, such as different department number in the address)
so it can be determined which ad generated the response.
Response is calculated for each ad, and the results are
compared to determine which yielded the best response. The
winning ad is then used in future marketing efforts, at least
until another test reveals an even better ad.
Such split-run advertising in print publications can be very
helpful for testing ad copy, prices, offers, etc., but it's
expensive, and can take weeks or months for ads to run. I
especially like conducting market research online, because it's
fast and cheap.
Let me share one example of how I've conducted online market
research. I selected Usenet newsgroups whose readers were likely
interested in the benefits of my information products in which
to run the tests.
Two different postings were used for each test. The message of
each posting was identical. I offered to send a text copy of any
one of several reports free by e-mail if the reader sent an
e-mail message indicating which one they wanted. (To make such
an offer online and fill the requests by e-mail only costs me
some time.)
The only difference between each posting of the test was that
two different headlines (subject lines) were used, whose pulling
power I wanted to compare with the other.
For the most accurate results, conditions should be as identical
as possible for each half of the test. An effort was therefore
made to run each different headline several times each, running
one headline one day, and the other the next, an equal number of
times.
Each newsgroup posting had a two-fold purpose:
1) To test the pulling power of each headline. The headline
that generated the greatest response could then be used to
improve future marketing communications. (Such a test can also
be useful in selecting a title for an information product,
since a product title is, in effect, a headline.)
2) To compare the popularity of each report in relation to the
others. The results would reveal which products should be given
more prominence in my marketing efforts, and indicate likely
areas for profitable expansion (spin-off or related products
and/or services to add to my line).
This is only one example to show you how market research can be
conducted. Since I wrote the first version of this article, I
now use another way to conduct market research; one that
practically operates by itself.

Some other ways of conducting market research are:
*by analyzing sales records to see which of your existing
products/services are most popular;
*by examining other successful businesses in your field to see
what has worked for them.
There are many different possible directions you can take in
your business. But if they are not 'hot' with your prospects or
customers, in that they don't help them achieve gain (reach a
goal) or relieve pain (solve a problem), they probably aren't
worth your time and effort. Market research can reveal such
useful information to you.

your business by conducting your own online market research -
