The Art of Win:Win Negotiating
None of us operates in a vacuum. Other people always play
an
important role in our lives and in our businesses. We cannot fully
succeed unless we manage our relationships in a way that helps
us move toward our goals.
Of course, other people have goals, too. Clearly, one of the keys to
a productive relationship is learning how to create situations that
benefit all parties.
Throughout the 1980s, as the Information Age expanded and
accelerated, a new model of individual behavior emerged,
characterized by a fiercely independent frame of mind. During
that time, many people learned to achieve their goals through
manipulation and intimidation.
Now, modern entrepreneurs recognize the wisdom of working
interdependently in order to be truly effective. The accelerating
pace of change and the explosive proliferation of information has
created a situation where no one person can possibly keep up
without enlisting the support and help of others. In today's market-
place, you have to be skilled in negotiating the terms of interaction
between yourself and your clients, colleagues or staff.
The Law of Reciprocity says that Like generates Like. From this
principle comes a radically new concept of winning: Winning and
Losing do not have to go hand-in-hand.
Who says that there must be a loser just because there is a
winner? With some effort and creativity, you can orchestrate a
situation so that all parties can have a win. The fundamental
premise of this philosophy is called Win:Win. Win:Win is the
highest form of reciprocity to which we can aspire.
Win:Win negotiation is essential when:
* you are building long-term relationships
* the results are likely to be public knowledge
* tension exists between the participants
* you want to take advantage of the synergy gained from
collaborative effort
Trained Win:Win negotiators always try to conduct themselves
according to the behavior appropriate to a Win:Win approach. They are assertive rather
than aggressive, creative versus antagonistic,
even if the other person is not willing to cooperate.
The skilled Win:Win negotiator focuses on the issues involved
and doesn't allow personalities to get in the way. If your negotiating
partner resorts to personal attacks or makes outrageous demands,
you can bring his behavior under control by maintaining control of
your own. The wise negotiator keeps cool under all circumstances.
Here are the key behaviors essential to a Win:Win negotiation:
** Be flexible. Start your negotiations with specific objectives, but don't draw a
"line in the sand". Have the confidence to adjust your
end game as you learn what the other person wants.
** State your objectives up front. Ask the other person to describe their desired end
result of the negotiations. This is crucial if you want a Win:Win outcome. The idea is not
to achieve your objectives OR their objectives. The purpose of Win:Win negotiation is to
have both of you working together to discover ways to achieve your objectives AND her
objectives.
** Use AND thinking. Determine if it is possible to achieve both
sets of objectives as they stand. If not, identify the common ground in both objectives.
** Concentrate on reasons, not positions. When you have a
difference of opinion, find out the reasons behind the differences.
When you take a position, there is a reason why you made that
decision. Attacking the decision or the position is a recipe for
deadlock, hard feelings and anger. Skilled Win:Win negotiators
explain their own reasons for a position and question the other
person to discover the thinking behind his or her decisions.
** Search for options. Concentrate on creatively generating
alternative solutions, ideas and possibilities that best fit the
objectives of both parties. This is an opportunity to really take
advantage of the creative power of two-heads-better-than-one.
** Trade concessions. Don't donate them. If you are asked to make
concessions from your ideal objective, ask the other person to
offer something in return. Say "If I do that for you, will you do this
for me?"
** Do your homework. The key to effective negotiation is prep-
aration. What can you learn in advance about the other person's
desired objectives, the current situation, preferences and
negotiating style? How well have you specified your objectives,
your bargaining chips and your bottom-line?
** Develop the shopping list. Before you start bargaining, obtain
a list of issues that your negotiating partners want to bring up. Be
sure to articulate your own list so you can start the bargaining with
a complete list of all the issues to be negotiated. This will help
prevent new issues from being introduced all along the way.
** Keep a written record of progress. As you come to agreement
on each issue, write it down. This will help maintain forward momentum.
** Make the most of your bargaining chips. Identify those con-
cessions you are willing to make that have a low cost to you and
that are important to your negotiating partner. When you offer
such a concession, remember to ask for something you want
in exchange.
** Slow down. Don't respond to pressure or urgency by making
snap decisions. Take a break to give yourself time to consider
the ramifications of your next actions. Never give away anything
when you do not fully understand the consequences.
** Encourage creativity. Use words like "What if we...", "What
about...", Would this...?" Draw ideas and pictures on a large paper or flip
chart. Occasionally, stop the bargaining to do some brainstorming together, then resume
the negotiation.
Remember that more and more, the issues being negotiated are
intangible. Time, service, quality and commitment are important
issues for negotiation. The value placed on each facet of these
intangibles is hard to see, touch and measure. Every person puts
different weight and value on these issues that make up much
of our negotiations.
As a skilled Win:Win negotiator, you must recognize that the way
another person values an issue may differ from your own. All
people view things their own way. Getting to an understanding
of how much the other person values each issue will allow you
to effectively bargain issue for issue.
In a world driven by information and knowledge, the traditional
rules of hard-nosed negotiation are less useful. Winning in
today's marketplace means ensuring that everyone can achieve
their necessary goals and outcomes. This in turn allows us to
establish and maintain long term business relationships.

14 PROVEN LAWS OF BANNER ADVERTISING
by Michael T. Glaspie

Michael T. Glaspie, a renowned direct marketer, author,

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Banner advertising unquestionably has become the
industry's most reliable, predicatable, and measurable
method for attracting new visitors. With 60-70% online
ad expenditures being allocated to banner advertisements,
there is little room for question as to the effectiveness
of a well managed banner ad campaign. I have therefore
assembled for your review the 14 principles of successful
banner advertising.
You are encouraged to incorporate these concepts into
your online marketing strategies, to not only boost
traffic to your site, but to leverage it as well.
1. Join two, three, or four quality exchange organizations.
A typical exchange organization will offer you usually
one-half to .7 or .8 credits, each time you host another
member's banner at your site, and a full credit will earn
you the displaying of your banner on another exchange
members site. Some exchanges offer multiple page coding
so you may host members banners on numerous pages throughout
your site. Thus membership in multiple exchange organizations
allows you to leverage visitors not only as a result of
each unique visitor producing multiple credits for you, but
also as a result of visitors who go beyond your home page,
explore your web site, and earn you additional exchange credits
through the impressions they are exposed to on any or all of
the pages you host banners on. It's highly possible to earn,
with a ten page web site, and a visitor who sees all ten pages,
ten or more credits, meaning impressions due you just for
belonging to two exchanges. Now that's leverage. My personal
favorites are <http://www.linkexchange.com/>
http://www.linkexchange.com, and my number one
favorite <http://www.bannerco-op.com/>
http://www.bannerco-op.com. The co-op offers a
full
one to one exchange plus a unique program paying cash for
click throughs. And you can exclude specific catagories of
competitors banners appearing on your pages.
2. When dealing with seconds, and sometimes fractions
of a second, to grab the attention of the viewer, it's
vital that your ad screams LOOK AT ME NOW. You accomplish
this goal primarily through and in this order, your copy,
color, graphics. Therefore spend as much time on the five
to ten words that little box has space enough for as you
did practicing to ask for that first date.
3. Bright colors almost always out perform the reds and
the blacks which are less effective. Use yellow, orange,
blue and green.
4. Animated banners have multiple advantages over static
or single screen banners. Use them to layer in additional
copy. A three screen animated banner easily provides
enough room for five to seven words per screen. Just
make certain the copy that you choose for the first
screen is compelling and attention getting. Focus on
your web site's premium benefit. Why do people visit
your site? What's in it for them? Build your headline,
ie: the first screen, or your static banner, based upon
your single most prominent, compelling benefit.
5. Banner size, should be maintained at 3-5K which is
ideal if you can accomplish your copy and creative objectives.
If not, up to 7 is OK. Never more than 10 as it takes much
longer to load and you run the risk of the visitor not
seeing your banner at all.
6. I can't stress this enough. There is no reason
not to brand every banner you ever create. Branding
your banner can be accomplished by doing nothing more
that placing your product or company logo on one of
the screens in the animation process, or simply giving
the name of your company, or domain name, or a picture
of your product. With average click through responses
in the 1-2% range, why waste 98% of the impressions by
not telling the viewer who you are or what your product
is? Off line advertisers have known for decades the
power of branding, and with properly designed banners
you can accomplish both direct response advertising
and branding simultaneously. With branding you can
get your name, your product name, continually in front
of your prospects, even if they don't "click" on.
7. Don't get hung up on hosting banners on your
site for fear that you'll lose a visitor. Listen,
they're going to leave anyways. If they're interested
in your site they'll stick with it until their interest
is totally satisfied. If not, you're going to lose
them in any event, so you may as well get some mileage
out of those visits.
8. Do not try to qualify your visitor. In other
words, let the site do the qualifying and selling
job for you. After all the name of the game is to
get each and every unique new visitor to your site
as possible, thus leveraging credits due you should
you belong to a banner exchange.
9. When building your five to ten word static
banner, or five to seven words first screen animated
banner copy, rely on these themes. Fear, curiosity,
humor, the big promise. Example, Warning, you must
see this before you purchase xxx; never worry about
losing xxx again, learn the secrets of cashing in on
xxx, do you know how to xxx? As an aside, a warning
banner is an enormously powerful approach. Many off
line yellow pages publishers will not even allow them
because the other advertisers complain about the unfair
advantage such an ad delivers. Try one.
10. The number one drawing card in banner advertising
is the use of the word FREE. Put your creative talents
to task here. Write a free report that solves a problem,
and post it at your site. Offer a free drawing, free
subscription to a e-zine. Free advertising, free trial
offer, free download for software, etc., etc.
11. Never assume your viewer knows what to do next.
Always, in one or more places, insert the words click
here, or, click here now, or show a drop down box with
a click arrow prominently displayed.
12. When appropriate to your marketing campaign,
buy click throughs and not impressions. With click
through purchases you can lock in on the cost of
each unique new visitor. Purchasing click throughs
helps to eliminate concern over rigorous and ongoing
testing and new banner design and creation concerns,
as well as the arduous task of ongoing meaning daily,
monitoring of each of your banner's effectiveness.
When purchasing click throughs and paying only for
those new visitors, all of those issues become
someone else's problem. Bannerco-op.com offers an
excellent click through program.
13. Targeting. If you are a niche market advertiser,
or a local or regional advertiser, targeting is vital
to the success of your banner campaign. You'll want
to very carefully select sites or work with an ad
agency that offers the opportunity to reach those
prospects who are the most likely to be interested
in your product or service. On the surface, purchasing
targeted impressions is more costly, however, it represents
the best way to reach your audience. If you're selling
automobiles in southeast Florida, it makes no sense to
place your banner into a national network where only a
fraction of the audience would have any interest.
Instead you'll want to target web sites serving the
community you service, including Chamber of Commerces,
newspapers, radio stations, television stations, and
other local and regional businesses serving the same
geography.
14. Test, test, and test some more. Once you've got
the perfect banner working, design another one because
sooner or later even the best banner runs out of steam.
It's generally accepted that after a prospect sees a
banner for the third or fourth time, the likelihood of a
click through plummets. When testing, always test the
next new design on the same site or on the same network,
so you are indeed comparing apples to apples. Testing
is a continual ongoing, dynamic process. Review your
stat pages on a daily basis and be prepared to act
quickly when results begin to lag. Remember the three
most critical elements of your banner. First the copy,
next the color, and next the graphics. Once a successful
banner has been created, tweaking and modifying these
elements can keep it alive and producing strong click-
throughs for many months.

Guest Article:
SEVEN DEADLY SINS IN INTERNET MARKETING
By Robert Dobyns
# 1) WAIT TOO LONG......Barnes & Noble is playing a hard (&
expensive) game of catch-up with rival bookseller Amazon.com
Instead of jumping onto the internet shuttle at first sign of it's
competitor's great success, they had to analyze it and do reports
on it and feasibility studies, etc., etc. The bottom line: they etc'd it to
death and it cost them millions. It's going to be a hard game for
Online Bookstore # 294 to make a successful venture!
Are you marketing on the internet yet?
# 2) WALK/DON'T RUN.....Once you finally do decide to begin
marketing online, the worst thing you can do is bring your picky little
perfectionist attitude with you! Guess what? The internet is an
imperfect system...it thrives & grows on tons of utter chaos! A little
bit of chaos at your site won't matter in the least. Once you have
decided to launch your internet business....RUN!!! Get the shell
of your online domain up & running & then change your focus to
generating traffic. If your sole dedication is to being artsy-fartsy,
then you'll have a beautiful domain for you (and only you) to look at!
RUN and grab & utilize every traffic-generating tool you can get
your hands on and craft your site little by little.....It will always be
evolving.....You'll NEVER be happy with it....Get people there &
sell them something!
Are you making money from your web site?
# 3) WORK TOO LITTLE.......If you've ever read my newsletter,
you know that this is my pet peave: People who lay on the couch,
watch Oprah & eat bon-bons all day long & then say, "My site
isn't working".
WRONG!!!!! YOU aren't working!
The internet works just fine for lots & lots of people who work
IT! Turn off the TV, turn ON the monitor & PROMOTE your site.
Are you promoting your web site daily?
# 4) WHISPER INSTEAD OF SHOUT.......Are you afraid of
hurting someone's eardrums on the internet? Of course not!
Then SHOUT!!!!!! "But Robert, proper netiquette says that
shouting is rude". SOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo!!!
It's effective.
Now, if I come to your site & post something there, I always
make certain I raise my little pinkie as I type in UPPER/lower
case as appropriate. But when someone comes to my site, I do
as I please to get their attention. I won't be playing elevator
music as some sites do (I don't think PUSH music belongs on a
commercial web site, but that's another article). If I DID
choose to play music, I would probably choose "Old Time
Rock-N-Roll" or some other song along that line that would
keep my customers awake for the sales pitch!
There's nothing wrong with an occasional "HEY YOU!!!!!" or
"LOOK AT THIS"!!!!
CONTINUOS CAPS, THOUGH IS JUST AS BORING AS
CONTINUOS LOWER CASE LETTERS THAT JUST
DRONE ON & ON & ON & ON WITH NO REAL
PURPOSE OR MEANING, JUST YAK, YAK, YAK,
YAK ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do people know that you exist?
# 5) WHINE TOO MUCH........My philosophy...It is better
to wine too much than to whine too much! At least then you
won't care about your whining just like others don't care about
hearing it. If there is a problem, find the solution..... Whining
wastes valuable time!
If you don't know how to solve the problem, you may have to
swallow that pride & break down & ask someone. Don't let
your business get stale & stagnant because you are unwilling
to find a solution.
Guess what?
Sometimes the solution is scrapping your whole project! Start
with something fresh & profitable! Virtual Pet Rocks probably
won't sell! Get over it & get on with it! As my friend, Carlo
Flores from California would say, "Been there...Done dat!" I
lost almost $12,000 on my last venture...a pittance to some,
but to me, a debt that is still being paid off! Did I say, "Shucks,
I guess businesses just don't work like they used to"? NO!
My thoughts were, "Well, that sure stinks....OK, now what can
I try!"
You WILL literally fail your way to the top. "If at first you don't
succeed, ______, _______ again" (It's the little lessons in life
that have the greatest impact!)
Can I help you with a solution?
# 6) WHIP ON OTHERS........Especially on the internet, this
will lead to entrepreneurial suicide. The whole internet business
scene is different than "real world" marketing. On the internet you
can market your business to millions of locations for FREE through
cooperative efforts & joint ventures. Can you imagine Ford saying
to Chevy, "I tell you what, you can put your Cavalier at our
dealerships if we can put our Mustang at yours". Think it'll happen?
NOT! Thus they must spend MILLIONS to try to get consumers
to stop frequenting the Chevy dealerships & entice them to come
to theirs. They must whip on each other in the public arena.
Follow this kind of independent strategy on the internet & you,
too, will have to spend big bucks to promote your business.
Subscribe to my newsletter and you'll see advertisements in
today's issue from competitors of mine who are selling the exact
same products/services which I am.
Crazy?
Well, my ad is ALSO in their e-zine today selling my goods.
They have doubled their reach ...I have doubled my reach!
Now I do this kind of swap with 15 different e-zines every
day...Get your calculator out and run the numbers for 6 days
per week X 15 ezines X 52 weeks......For FREE!!! This kind
of advertising would cost me OVER $100,000 if I wanted to
play the "Lone Ranger" of internet marketing...Play smart...
Play cheap!
Would you like to join me in promoting our businesses?
# 7) WIGGLE & WRIGGLE TILL YOU DROP.......Plain &
simple: If you can excuse yourself for any of the above, you're
dead in the water! If you can identify any of these traits in your
entrepreneurial approach to internet marketing, FIX THEM!
Don't wiggle about and say, "Well, that's just the way I am"
or "You can't teach an old dog new tricks". GET AN
ATTITUDE CHECK!!! Or talk to someone who shoots
straight and will tell you that you need to get focused. That's
why I appreciate my friend Dr. Jeffery Lant. He tells it
like it is. No sugar coating. "Shape up or your ship will sink,
boy!!" "Get on with it!!" "Move it, move it, move it!!" Reminds
me of my drill sergeant in the Army...Gruff, but effective!!
Find someone who will give you a swift kick in the pants when
you need it!!
Realize your short-comings & vow to fix them. Attitudes &
habits don't form overnight and will not dissolve with wishing.
If you mess up today, start over tomorrow to be the success
you want to be......The internet is wide open to your ideas.
EXPRESS THEM!!!!!
Do you have a goal for your success?
