Special Sales Promotions Any Web Site Owner Can Use

Many Web site owners don't realize it, but initiating a few
unique promotions to your online presence, can make sales
jump dramatically. Why is that?
Well think about it like this... Real-life department stores
are always using those 'one day sales' to draw in more customers.
It's not like there won't be another sale within the next two weeks.
However consumers continue to flock to these sales events because
of the hype.
It works the same way when you add a little promotional hoopla to
your own Web site. In the prospects eyes, little things really do
mean a lot.
Here are a few ideas that you can implement on your own Web site:
* Offer a Frequent Buyer Card:
If you sell a product or service that people people order on
a regular basis, issuing a frequent buyer card would help to
increase brand loyalty. In this case, the more the person buys,
the closer they get to receiving a freebie.
A shoe store could offer one free pair of shoes for every twelve
purchased. A success coach might give a free session when a client
books, and pays for three in advance.
You can deliver your cards in two different formats. (Personally
I like the latter of the two, because it cuts down on purchasing
costs.)
1. Send a newly stamped out card with each new order.
2. Give each customer a special Web page that they can log onto,
to find out what their status is.
* Have a Birthday Club:
In this promotion you collect prospective customers birthday's,
and contact information, so that you can send them a free gift
on their special day. This free gift can be something small, like
a premium item. You also include coupons for your site, and a
flyer which lists your specials. Advertise this feature on the
homepage of your Web site.
* Use Constant Contact:
Constant Contact, (www.constantcontact.com)
is a collection of
no-charge software services that help you to keep communication
lines open with your customers. Here's a list of what they offer:
1. Reminders:
Which allow you to remind your customers of important dates,
selected events and gift giving occasions encouraging them to
return to your site to make gift purchases.
2. Store Favorites:
Enables your customers to identify pages from your site that they
may want to return to in the future. Customers get to easily build
a personalized view of your site.
3. Email This Page to a Friend:
Offers your customers an easy way to "tear" a page out of your site
and to share it with others who may be interested.
4. Keep Me Posted:
Once your customers are interested in one of your offerings, keep
them alerted to changes. This give them an opportunity to come back
for more.
* Send Private Notes to Big Buyers:
Whenever you get a significant purchase, let's say $1,000 and up,
you'll want to place this customers information into a special "high
rollers" database. Every month you can send a special note to these
customers alerting them to new merchandise, upcoming specials and
private sales. You can even create a password-protected section on
your Web site for big buyers.

My $.02 Worth
Sell What They Want and Sell All You Need
A few weeks ago, or 1 year ago in Internet time, I warned you to
stay away from something that was burning up my inbox, "AOL
Goes MLM." Major news stories broke the exciting (?) news.
For a few days at least this was a SURE THING.
I questioned the validity of a program to sell online services to
people already online. How can I be interested in visiting the
affiliate's $500 fancy-shmancy site about online access to the
Internet if I am already there? Big market, yes, but probably
already satisfied with what they have. Already satisfied means
little interest. Little interest means few sales. Few sales results
in closing your online doors.
So you will sell part of the Millions coming online in the next 12
months, they said. How would I sell a large enough portion of
that market? Door to door? Not me. How about you?
Fortunately, you do not have to wrestle with the concept of selling
AOL person to person. They have dropped the program. In theory,
if you joined, you will get your money back. Had you examined the
market and seen though the hype, you would not need to to worry
about that.
The basic premise of sales will never change. Find a need and fill it.
The need is satisfied, and money is made. The bigger the market,
the more sales will be made. The more sales that can be made, the
more salesmen/saleswomen the "opportunity" will support.
Let's find a large market. Hmmm. Everybody online, you say.
Too big. You cannot tailor a message that will appeal to such a
poorly defined market.
Everyone who uses a chat program. This is the kind of program
that lets you enter chat rooms and send and receive messages from
family and friends.
Too big. IRC, IQC, PAL and others are too different to be able
to properly target them. Try again.
ICQ users.
Great. That is a large market. When I downloaded my latest version,
ICQ99a Beta, which has been a HOT download item, they were
predicting 20,000,000 users by October this year.
What need do these folks have? Well, they want to communicate
with each other. There is no other reason to have this product. They
have the ability to send and receive files, email, web pages, but there
is something missing.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Writing back and forth creates
a bond that is stronger. That is really what chat is. Short bursts of
written communication shared one-to-one or in groups. What could
be better than that? Nothing else comes to mind?
When I was a chatter, which I was for months cyber years ago when
I had the time, the one thing that I missed that I could not do with
ICQ was share live SPOKEN conversation. Yes, I know about
NetMeeting and other programs, but getting them to work with ICQ
was a challenge and the results were less than satisfactory.
I wanted to talk to friends in California, Hawaii, New York Florida
and other places. I wanted a personal connection to my friends.
If you want to sell online, sell what people want, and you can sell
all you need.
You can now sell the opportunity for folks in Hawaii to talk to
people in New York or Africa. The product is free if you can
deal with the 5 minute time limit. If you want to speak in person
for more than that you will need to pop for the full-fledged copy
of this software.
Everything that was wrong with the first sales proposal is right
about this affiliate plan. Entry cost for you? $20-$500 for the
failure vs. FREE. A pent-up need exists? Nope vs. Yes. I would
still like to save long distance bills by calling ICQ associates over
the Internet. Product cost? A bit under $25 per month for AOL
vs. $25.00 for lifetime support of this product. Viral-like
penetration of the market potential? Nope vs. Yes. How long
before every chat room hears about a product that can make
chat a LIVE personal experience? I am guessing not long. I expect
this product to do marvels because it is free to try and it satisfies
a need.

META TAGS ARE NOT A MAGIC SOLUTION

Meta tags are useful in getting better listings in the
search engines. However, not all search engines support
meta tags. This means that some search engines ignore
them. But include meta tags in your document for the engines
that do use them. It will significantly increase your rating.
There are many, many different meta tags. The only ones you
need to be concerned with are the "description" and "keyword"
tags. The description tag provides a summary which appears
when your page comes up on a search. Without this "description"
the search engine will create one. It will generally use the
first few lines of text at the top of your page. Search engines
that read everything on your page will include alt tags and
links to a banner that is at the very top of your page. This
is why it is not a good idea to have a banner at the top. The
beginning of your page should be a title (use keywords here)
and text. The first paragraph should be heavy with keywords,
but not so heavy as to make it difficult to read or understand.
You want to work the keywords in so it sounds natural for them
to be there.
If your site is heavy on graphics and short on text, then you
need to use meta tags. Otherwise, you have very little chance
to come up on the search engines. Consider the meta tags as
tools that make up for a lack of text on your site. Your best
option, however, is to have a site that is heavy in content
and text. You will not only get a better ranking in the search
engines, but you will please the people who visit your site.
After all,isn't this the name of the game?
"Keywords" tags provide keywords for the search engine to
associate with your page. It gives your page a chance to come
up if someone is searching for one or more of your keywords.
Choose your keywords carefully. Try to imagine what the
searcher will enter for their search. Do NOT use keywords
that are not relevant to your site. Many people think that
because "sex" is one of the most common keywords used for a
search, that it is good to include it in their keyword list.
This is just another form of spam. Don't do it. You could
get a lot of hate mail.
Key words should always be two or more words, in other words,
key phrases. If you only use single keywords you are likely
to get lost in the crowd. For example, if you have a site
that specializes in 'free business opportunities', list that
as a keyword phrase instead of listing each word i.e.: free,
business, opportunities. It is not likely that someone looking
for 'free business opportunities' is going to type in just
'business' into their search. Can you imagine all the sites
that would come up if that were the case? You would be lost
in the crowd. Be specific with your keyword phrases. Put
yourself in the place of the person doing the search. What
are they likely to type in as their search?
It is not enough to have a list of keywords in your meta
tags. These keywords must also appear in the title tag as
well as in the text on your page. If you fail to do this,
then your ranking with the search engines will be low, no
matter how may keywords you have. It is most important that
your keywords appear in the first paragraph on your page.
They should also be in the title and headers. Some search
engines also read 'alt tags'. Be sure to use relevant
keywords there also.
Some of the search engines don't like line breaks in meta
tags. It is best to have your meta tags as one long line
rather than having it wrap. I have been told that if your
tags wrap, the search engine only reads the first line.
You do not need a mile long string of keywords. The search
engine will not read all of them. The standard is 1024
characters. The spaces between your keywords also count
as a character. Don't use spaces. Use commas to separate
your keywords. Select your keywords very carefully,
and arrange them in order of importance.
There are no 'secrets' to search engine success. Meta tags
are not a magic solution to getting listed. Using meta
tags along with other methods, such as having a content
rich site, will dramatically boost your ranking in the
major search engines.
