"How to Turn Freebies into Sales" Part I.
Interview With Mark Joyner of Aesop Marketing by
Kris Stringham of TrueProfits.com

My name is Kris Stringham, webmaster of TrueProfits.com and
Publisher of Xtreme Marketing Tips. I have worked with Mark Joyner
for over a year now. I can attest to his honest and pure marketing
ingenuity. His latest effort is 1001 Killer Internet Marketing Tactics,
and it is taking the net by storm. It has become their number one seller
in a very short period of time. Today we are going to discuss some key
elements of your marketing strategy that must be in place because they
are crucial to your success on the net. Below is a conversation that I
had with Mark Joyner recently that really brought out those key elements.

Mark, you have created a huge internet presence for
Aesop Corporation with various sites.  Tell me a little about
yourself and your road to success on the net.

[Mark]
Thanks for having me here today Kris. By the end of this interview
my goal is to get you and all of your listeners *on fire* about the
possibilities of e-commerce.

I developed my first site back in 1994 just as a hobby.  At the time,
e-commerce was something no one had even considered.  I immediately
became intrigued at how I could apply what I had learned about psychology
and military strategy to online marketing.  After hours of testing (I applied
the scientific method to my market testing) I developed the beginnings of my
Internet Marketing Doctrine.  A later, more effective, version of that
formula formed the basis for what everyone now knows as 1,001 Killer
Internet Marketing Tactics.

The end result is that I am now the CEO of Aesop Marketing Corporation and
we have had tremendous success using my techniques.  However, the Internet
truly levels the playing field for small business.  One doesn't even have to
establish a corporate presence the way we have.  A great many entrepreneurs
make no bones about their being a one man show.

[Kris]
So the main issue here is creating a professional image, and backing it up
with high quality products and services, regardless of the size of the
operation.

[Mark]
Exactly right Kris.

[Kris]
There is an incredible amount of competition on the internet. One of the
first things that I learned was to offer free, valuable information to your
potential customers.  That is one of the best ways to get them coming back.
I started giving away your free e-books Search Engine Tactics, and Guerilla
Web Marketing and Promotion over a year ago as an incentive to subscribe to

That is an excellent strategy Kris and you have hit upon one of the most
powerful formulas available.  Pre-Internet marketers used similar techniques
for many years.  For example, supermarkets have offered people free gifts
just for stopping by.  Once they are in the store, they know it is likely
they will buy something else as well. This works online as well.

There are two key concepts here:

The "Law of Abundance" and the
"Foot in the Door Phenomenon".

Self-Help gurus have been talking about the Law of Abundance for years
and have even touched on how it can lead to wealth.

However, I think they have mostly missed the mark.  They grossly
oversimplify it and say that "the more you give, the more you get".

Now, this is a beautiful thought and makes one feel warm and fuzzy, but
is not the whole picture.

[Kris]
These are great concepts!  What is the whole picture?

[Mark]  OK, I'll get to that in a second. I'll give you a formula that I
know will work.

Now, salesman have been using the Foot in the Door Phenomenon to their
advantage for many years.  For example, rather than walk right up to
someone's door and say "would you like to buy a vacuum cleaner?" -they say
"would you mind if I vacuumed your carpet for you?"

It is quite obvious which would be more effective.  Once the second salesman
is in that person's house, they are more likely to listen positively to the
sales pitch.

That is closer to the mark for what we need to incorporate in our online
sales efforts.

[Kris]
That example hits it right on the head. We as marketers need to adopt the
attitude of "What Can I do or offer my Prospects that will help them
Succeed" rather than "Do You want to buy my Marketing Course?"

[Mark]
Right!  Building a relationship with your prospects in crucial to your
online success.  That one-shot marketing philosophy will not get you far
by itself. I talk about that in 1,001 Killer Internet Marketing Tactics.
There are some cases where it will work, but you have to understand the
dynamic.

Mixed Bag:: Editor's Ramblings

*I have to begin the ramblings this week with a big thank you to
one of my subscribers, Eddie.  Eddie was kind enough to point out
the similarity of AllAdavantage and GoToWorld.  Both offer a
"get paid to surf" offer, trading advertising views for cash per hour,
but I do not know how long it would have taken me to find out
about the second without his bringing that program to my attention.
THANKS EDDIE, VERY MUCH.  Unfortunately for Eddie, he
uses WebTv so he can't take advantage (no pun intended) of either
program at the moment, although both programs say they will be
rolling WebTv versions later this summer.

*Thanks to those of you who expressed your appreciation for my
warning this week on the explorer worm/virus that was running
rampant this last week.  Your kind comments made the effort
worth it.

*For those of you who are exploring the 2nd company paying you
to "surf the net" take heart, after GoToWorld failed to put account
information online, I sent a quick email asking for clarification.  I
was told that the information will be online later this week.  I do
see that they have added to the banner advertising several new
clients which I take as a good sign, although this morning the site
seems to be down.  We are hopeful, but the jury is still out.  Still,
there is not a cost to get the browser (used to deliver the ads) and
it offers some interesting features, like a promise to translate web
sites in foreign languages into English.  Don't have the browser?

My name is Kris Stringham, webmaster of TrueProfits.com and

conversation that I had with Mark Joyner, CEO of Aesop Corporation,
and very well respected Internet Marketing Expert. We discussed
Part II of some key elements of your marketing strategy that must be in
place, because they are crucial to your success on the net.

Last week we talked about offering free, valuable information to your
potential customers as one of the best ways to get them coming back.
The importance of creating a professional image, and backing it up with
high quality products and services, regardless of the size of the operation.
Plus The "Law of Abundance" and the "Foot in the Door Phenomenon".
You stated that those concepts are great that is not the whole picture.
What is the whole picture? Can you sum up what we need to do as online
marketers?

[Mark]
Absolutely.  I actually have a simple formula for freebie marketing
that will work for you every time.  It more accurately explains how the
process works.

It is: Target, Tie-In, and Collect

[Kris]
You've got my attention.

[Mark]
Remember, freebies can work if you don't use this formula, but
this formula will ensure you get maximum mileage from your freebie
campaigns.

Now, let's talk about Target.

You must ensure your freebie matches your target market.  For example, if
you are selling cars, offering a free bottle of furniture polish is not
going to get you the right crowd.  Ask yourself, "what will my target market
also be interested in?"

Next, you must Tie that freebie into your sales process.  This is where
most people blow it.  Very few are doing this correctly right now.

[Kris]
One great example of this concept is the 5 day free internet marketing
course that you have created.  Can you comment on the power of that specific
example?

[Mark]

Sure.  That course has been a tremendous success for us.  The technique was
tailored for my formula and the results were fabulous. You'll also notice
that we allow our referral partners to use this course to promote our
products as well. The simply put a sign up form on their sites and we do
the rest. That's targeted email sent out on the behalf of the referral
partner. I don't think anyone else is doing that. (To Get a firsthand look at this

I use this course on my site, and have gotten incredible results using it.

[Mark]
I know.  I sign your checks!

[Kris]
Yeah!

[Mark]
Trialware is another great example of the "tie-in" concept. The freebie
itself is the product and naturally leads in to the sale if you take a few
simple measures.

Now, if you can't offer a free trial of your product, think of some other
way that you can tie the freebie into the sales process.  If your freebie
itself serves as a reminder to buy it will be quite powerful.

Finally, you should always use your freebie to collect the surfer's email
address.

[Kris]
Exactly. Freebies are are crucial in capturing that all important e-mail
address.

[Mark]
The way you are doing this with our Search Engine Tactics book is spot on.
Use these freebies as an incentive to get people to sign up for your
newsletter. Then tie this in with the sales process. ( Editors Note:

I think one more aspect is to keep it fresh.  Introduce new freebies
as often as you can.  Keep those prospects coming back.  Give them
a good reason to read your newsletter or visit your web-site time
and time again.

[Mark]
Exactly. There is so much information on the net.  You don't have to
re-invent the wheel.  Just implement the principals we have outlined
above and you will see some dramatic results!

[Kris]
