What's Your Swoosh?
The Nike "swoosh" is virtually synonymous with sporting goods.
McDonald's, with its mesmerizing "M", towers above all other fast
food restaurants. Yahoo! grabs your attention with its exclamation.
No wonder it commands 50% of the search engine market.
Once you establish an identity in the business world, you are already
half way to success. The big guns understand the importance of the
"swoosh" and use it to their full advantage (I will use this term loosely
to refer to business identity).
To succeed on the net, you too must have a "swoosh". Your
company name should become linked with the product or service
that you are selling. A swoosh is the difference between standing
among and standing out from the crowd. There is more to identity
than just a logo. Domain name, content, motto, design, and theme
are equally important.
- Domain Name
The game begins here. Using your surname is not a good
idea. Ideally, your domain name should capture the essence
of your business. Great example: an Australian web design
company uses http://www.idealdesign.net. Much better than fawadahmed.com, no? A good name
is catchy and easy to
remember.
- Site Content
As a site reviewer, I have seen many websites without focus.
A Link Exchange banner here, an affiliate program there,an
external link for good (bad?) measure, and somewhere in
that jungle is product information. This is the internet version
of an identity crisis. Each page should be supportive of your
business theme and without distractions.
- Logo
A well-designed logo captures visitor attention and helps you
standout from the competition. A logo is your stamp of
authority. Other people may be selling widgets, but the one
with a stamp on it is better recognized. Would you rather
buy a generic polo shirt, or one with a caricature (albeit silly)
stitched on the left breast?
- Motto
Be creative and clever in choosing a motto for your business.
My favorite, again from the folks at Ideal Design: "because
reaching the world shouldn't cost the earth". It's unique,
powerful, and memorable.
- Design
Many websites are inconsistent in layout. I've seen many with
three or four different text styles in as many colors. Too much
variation in background color and page format is
unprofessional, distracting, and makes a terrible impression
on the visitor. Choose a solid color theme and use it
throughout your site. Repeat your logo and motto frequently
in your site, too.
- Theme
This strategy is great for some websites. Blending your identity
into your website helps people to identify with you and builds
customer trust. For example, if you are a physician by
profession, you may choose to use the medicus symbol on
your site, or entitle your services based on medical language
(i.e. "Website Medic" site reviews).
I mentioned earlier that establishing your "swoosh" on the net is half
the battle. In case you're wondering, the other half is relentless
promotion. Get yourself a swoosh and you'll sell more widgets than
your competitor, my friend. And that ain't half bad.

Mixed Bag:: Editor's Ramblings
Yours truly was amoung the 50,000 who got permission to get the
viewbar for AllAdvantage. A few glitches, but very happy to finally
be paid for time online. The order for the BMW will have to wait
for later signups to get their viewbars too. Some of you may wonder
how I can combine the ads from freepc.com and AllAdvantage and
GoToWorld? Quick answer is that I cannot really do that. My
poor computer resources get gobbled up. The long answer is that
I am not going to do that, because I want to have each of these
programs survive and thrive. I alternate between computers and
programs, trying to find a happy mix.
The ezine-book promised last week is nearly done. It will be a
great resource when released, maybe by next week.

The Rainmaker
Remember when scientists used to seed the
clouds to try to make it rain? They would fly over rain clouds and dump salt pellets to
try to force the rain from the clouds. I guess they figured that they could just help
Nature along a bit.
In my years of helping business owners and professionals discover ways to grow their
business, I've seen many who sat around waiting for rain. They would wait by the phone,
hoping a prospective client would call or come to the business. Their attitude seemed to
be a combination of passive hope and resignation. They hope someone will do business with
them. They hope that others will initiate contact with them. They seem resigned to
whatever business floated their way.
Others, including some of the most successful, took positive action
"to make it rain". These are the ones who made calls, ran ads, got
out of the office to make their own contacts. Through their activity,
these business professionals created opportunities for new business.
A few years ago, my own business went through a slow period. As
the business slowed down, revenues decreased and demands on my time decreased, too. For
awhile, I enjoyed the slower pace. Then I figured out that we were on a path to financial
disaster. I realized that something had to change drastically.
Verna, my wife and business partner, finally said, "Get on the phone
and stir up the cosmic dust"! So, I took her advice and started
making calls. I called everyone I knew. I called past clients, old
prospects, people from my old phone lists. I even called people
I knew in a previous company. Also, I got out of the office and
attended business mixers, seminars and other events where
business professionals (my target market) tended to show up.
Sure enough, after I started all the activity, we began to notice that
the phone was ringing constantly. We were getting calls from
prospective clients wanting to know more about our services. Even
more interesting, many of the incoming calls were from people we
did not contact. It seemed like the very act of outbound activity was
causing inbound business.
Time and again over the years, I've seen this phenomenon.
Positive action, directed outward seems to stir up the cosmic
dust. It doesn't work if the actions are directed inward. No matter
how many times you count the inventory, rearrange the furniture
or have internal meetings, these inward-focused actions won't
cause clients to show up or prospects to call you.
So what does this mean for you? Consider a couple of things.
First, brainstorm the types of outward-focused activities that are
appropriate for your business. Would it be appropriate to make
calls (to whom?), go visit (where?), run ads (what type, when?).
Would it be reasonable to attend mixers, seminars, do some
direct mailings, conduct a telephone survey, or canvass the neighborhood?
Next, pull out your calendar and start blocking off some time for
these tasks. Generally, this type of business-building activity is
best done in blocks of time, so pencil in blocks of one to three
hours for this.
Clearly, most of these actions require preparation. To make sure
you don't make a career of just the preparation, schedule the
set-up tasks on your to-do list for specific days. That way, you're
more likely to get them done.
Finally, just do it. You know in your heart that you enjoy the results
of this business-building action, especially when the revenue
starts to come in. The benefits to you and your enterprise are
legion. More clients, more revenue, better client relationships
and happier employees are just a few of the advantages you'll
realize when you take action to make it rain.
So, what are you waiting for? "Stir up the cosmic dust"!
