There have been many trends to hit the net in the last few
years. Trends that started with a spark and spread like
wild fire!


Linkomatic took FFA Pages and turned them into a powerful

Link exchange became the largest banner exchange on the
Internet! <http://www.linkexchange.com>


Bulletin Boards used to be fairly rare. Now, thanks to Matt's
Scripts, <http://worldwidemart.com/scripts/> nearly every
web site you visit has one, or soon will!


There's a new trend on the horizon. It's electronic books.


And they are a tremendous asset to any marketer!


To my knowledge Jim Daniels <http://www.bizweb2000.com> was
very instrumental in starting the new trend with these books.
I'm not saying he created them, he just came up with the
idea of letting folks redistribute them from their own site.


His reasoning was that folks are reluctant to point their
visitors away from their site, so.. Let them give it away
FROM their site.


Phenomenal idea! And it worked so well that loads of
marketers quickly jumped on the bandwagon. There are also
sites that have created "free book" directories. Nearly
anything you can think of can be found in them! AND many
of them will include your book just for the asking.

Keep looking. When you come across a site that lists ebooks,
email them. Tell them a little about your book. Take some
time on your description, they may use it when they list
your book. If you give a quick, jumbled description, chances
are pretty good that they won't download it, much less read it.
Take your time!



Some tips for publishing and promoting your ebook:



1. DO NOT publish a book that has been done to death!


Use your head. Yes, marketing is a popular subject, with
a huge following. But, let's face it folks, the same old,
same old, that can be found anywhere on the net is not going
to draw readers, and it sure won't get them to upload your
book to their site and give it to their visitors!


Nope.


So, what can you do? When it seems that everything has been
done to death, how can one make it fresh?


The answer to that is to specialize. Doctors do it. Lawyers
do it, professors, technicians.. and YOU can too!


For instance, if you're knowledgeable about search engines,
write a book on each of them. Make it a series. Add links
to the other books in each or your books!


There are 8 major search engines. We all want to place well
on them, but few of us have the time or desire to learn about
all of them in one setting. It quickly becomes overwhelming.
Yet, if all of them are in the book, we try to tackle them all
and eventually become disgusted and give up. Then we tell
others how we read your book, but it didn't help at all!


Now, let's say that you wrote a book on Infoseek. Since they
add sites the quickest, that would be a popular book! Folks
are much more likely to give your book a rave review if they
are able to utilize your information successfully, right? Yep!
Instead of telling others that they didn't get a thing from
your book, they'll tell others - "Hey, I read a book about
placing well on Infoseek and it worked! The name of the book
is __________".


The same hold true with any area of marketing and promotion.
Specializing will brand you as a REAL authority on a particular
subject. Your reader will comprehend more and want more! Give
'em a piece of the pie rather than the whole pie. Then after
they've digested that, they're ready for more.



2. Be generous with your links to others.


I was in a debate some time back, concerning linking away
from your site. It developed into a rather "heated" discussion.
(what can I say, I thrive on controversy, don't we all?)


I said then, and still say, "If you have a site worthy of your
visitors, they will return!" The key being "worthy".


If you just throw a site together with a bunch of links, hang
it up friend. You're doomed for the abyss of the terminally
forgotten! And rightly so. Time is money. I wouldn't waste
my time on such a site and neither will many others!


Every marketer who is seriously committed to their business
is constantly searching the net looking for more ways to
promote that business. Many of us spend hours each day
looking for something new and beneficial. Something to help
us get the word out, to save time, to reach a larger audience.
Promotion..promotion...promotion!


If you are the source of that information, you won't be
forgotten! So, be generous with your information. Include
helpful links!



3. Co-author with others.


It takes some real time to put together a great book. Hours of
editing. Offering information and sometimes entertainment - to
hold the reader's interest.


Co-authoring gives you the benefit of two great minds and a
fresh perspective. Fantastic way to get feed back. A definite
Win-Win!



4. Contact those you link to:


This is a great way to get promotion before you even put the
book out! If you're going to mention other people, feel free
to contact them and offer a copy of the book. If they like
it, they just may plug it for you! Doesn't hurt to ask. The
worst that can happen is they email you back with a nasty
reply or ignore you entirely. You're over 12, you can handle
that.



5. Try the software before you buy.


There's a variety of ebook software for you to choose from. Don't
buy it until you've tried it out. I could rave on and on about
the merits of the software that I used, but it may not work for
you.


Phil Wiley offers reviews of some of the software. He tells you
a little about each one and he's written an article called,
"How To Publish An Ebook".

Mixed Bag:: Editor's Ramblings

*Wow what a week.  It has been about 10 days since I last sent
you this ezine.  Lots of stuff happening all over.  For example,
FreePC told me that they are going to send out 20,000 right away,
then about 5,000 per month for quite some time.  There appears
to be no shortage of advertisers willing to pay to be on the screen
of FreePC computers.  GoToWorld is close to sending out their
first checks.  Meanwhile, AllAdvantage has told the world, it sent
$250,000 to early viewbar users this past week or so.  They have
not said what their target hours are for surfing limits in September,
they did say that they have sent out well over one million "veiwbars."
They also said they intend to get the time between signup and access
to the adstream software to under a week, perhaps as quickly as
September.  All three of these companies are mining what appears
to be a new lucrative market, the adstream market. This business
has advertisers standing in line to give ad dollars to companies like
these.  These companies are then turning around and handing much
of that cash to people like me, who use the software to accept the
advertising.  Nothing breeds competition like success, and there
are now at least 10 companies offering "get paid to surf" the web

*OK, Chris, you say, those adstream companies are all start-ups.
No serious internet company is moving in this direction, right?
Oh really? Pop over to www.microav.com where a little company
you might have heard of, AltaVista, is offering free ISP service in
selected cities with the use of their viewbar, which they call a
MicroPortal.  If you read all way the down the page, you will see
that soon you can have a MicroPortal on your computer that you
can use with your own Internet connection.  So what? So, if AV
is sniffing around the edges of giving out sweepstakes prizes and
gift certificates, some of the other big 'uns will be doing it too.

*Maybe it is because I just opened our e-library to public view,
but I am finding more and more e-books out there.  This past week,
working from a tip from another newsletter by Alan Gardyne of
http://www.AssociatePrograms.com I found a very nice fellow
with a slightly different take on making it online.  I was so impressed
with both his writing style and his message, that I begged him to let
me add his book to my e-library.  I am very happy to be able to
tell you that he gave me permission to link to his site.  There are about
100 pages of fascinating reading, you will discover his belief that
the best way to succeed is to be overly generous with those you
come into contact with online.  This is a book that is a work in
progress and probably could and should be sold for a profit after

invite others to your site has been Recommend-It.  I think that may

of 450 members (out of 2 million plus) who have added more than
1,000 members to the AA family.  I doubt they will pay me more,
but it is nice to see where my efforts have landed me. What struck
me more was that even with 2 million members, that only represents

Do You Make Your Prospects and Customers Jump Through Hoops?

Picture this scenario: Your prospect has looked over an offer
for one of your products or services and is now ready to buy
from you. How you handle the next step can make or break you.
Problems in this area may be costing you dearly in lost sales -
right this very minute.

I invite you to do a bit of honest self-examination when
considering the tips below. Acting to improve on what you
discover could very well help boost your sales immediately.

1) How Easy Is It for Your Customers to Access the Information
Needed to Buy From You?

a) For example, does the design of your web site make it hard
to navigate, or is at least the majority of information needed
to complete a transaction within easy access to your customers,
with a minimal number of mouse clicks?

b) While you may wisely reduce the amount of repetitive
customer service issues by answering questions through
FAQs, (an acronym for Frequently Asked Questions) etc., some
prospects may yet have additional questions not covered in the
information you've made available to them.

Do your prospects have a way to contact you to have such
questions answered, and do you have an efficient system in
place for addressing such issues, promptly and efficiently? Is
the form of contact convenient to your prospects?

2) What Forms of Payment Do You Offer Your Customers?

a) Do you require your customers to send payment to you by
check, cash or money order only via regular postal mail? If
you're selling online and not accepting credit cards, you're
likely losing many sales.

b) What types of credit cards do you accept? Many types of
businesses can increase sales by accepting payment by Visa and
MasterCard, which are accepted in many countries around the
globe. Accepting payment by Discover and American Express can
increase profits by offering even more customer convenience,
particularly in the U.S. (However, Visa and MasterCard
encompass the vast majority of all credit card transactions.)

3) How Easy Do You Make It for Customers to Submit Payment?

a) Suppose that you DO accept credit cards. Even though online
credit card purchasing isn't really more risky than other
forms, many are understandably concerned about submitting their
credit card data online. Are you setup to allow your customers
to place online credit card orders through a secure server?

Accepting credit cards can certainly boost online profits;
giving customers a SECURE method for placing online credit
card orders can boost profits even further.

b) Some browsers (such as WebTV) don't support secure online
transactions, but online credit card ordering may still be the
preferred payment method. Do you give such customers the option
to submit online orders through an optional non-secure form
that would work with their browsers, should they be comfortable
with that payment submission method?

c) Of course, many don't want to order online, regardless of
the reason. Do you have an order form (preferably just one
page long) that customers can print out and fax or mail to you,
along with payment by check, cash, money order, or credit card?

Also, is it easy for customers to copy and paste the text from
that form into an email message, along with credit card data,
for those comfortable doing so?

d) Are your order forms simple to use and understand, or
confusing and inconvenient to your prospects? Have you tried to
eliminate all guesswork for your customers, given them
complete order details, and guided them gently and simply
through the process of making an informed buying decision?

Any extra hoop you require prospects to jump through is an
obstacle in the way of a smooth-flowing order process, and
another reason to procrastinate or change their minds about
buying from you.

e) Have you considered the option of letting customers place
credit card orders by telephone, perhaps even through a 24
hour toll-free answering service, if circumstances warrant it?

f) If your budget permits and the situation calls for it, do
you have a dedicated fax line, or perhaps a second dedicated
phone, so you can conduct business through them while you are
online?

Now don't feel bad if you find areas for improvement in the
points above. Look at them as an opportunity to increase your
profits. I've recently found a few areas that I can improve on
myself, which is one thing that prompted me to write this
article. There is ALWAYS room for improvement in every
business in existence.

You see, the basic principle behind the above suggestions (all
of which may not apply to your specific situation) is to make
it as easy as possible for customers to buy from you. The
easier you make it, the more likely they will.
