Six Universal "Secrets" of Business Success

One definition of the word "secret," according to the New
Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is something "kept from general
knowledge." Judging by the high failure rate of many
entrepreneurial ventures, the principles of business success
that I'm about to share with you could rightly fall under the
definition of secret.
I was a student of successful business practices before I
developed my own successful online business. If you're like
me, you believe that much can be learned from others that have
already been successful in a certain endeavor, rather than
always trying to reinvent the wheel.
I've found in reaching my own goal of "leaving the rat race" to
run my own profitable Internet business from home that many
success principles are more or less universally applicable
toward any legitimate business, online or off.
The rewards possible from owning your own business aren't
just financial ones. There is also the freedom and exhilarating
feeling that working for yourself can give you.
Let me now share some of those universal business success
"secrets" with you:
1) The main thrust of business is to provide more and better
products and services, to larger numbers of people, at less
cost. Any business activity not tied in with achieving that in
business - while it may be important - is less important than
this ultimate goal.
2) Related to the above point is the maxim: "Everything is
marketing." The world cannot beat a path to your door to buy
your "better mouse trap" if the world doesn't know about it.
Marketing is the key to letting the world know about your
products and services. There have been many products that had
great sales potential, but faded into obscurity due to poor
marketing. If you want to succeed in business, effective
marketing skills are crucial.
3) Keeping a tight rein on expenses - while at the same time not
being "penny wise and pound foolish," is a wise business
practice. However, frugality is not encouraged in many
societies. Entrepreneurs find it to be a boon, when kept in
proper balance.
One of the greatest assets of doing business online is the
ability to reduce overhead expenses to a minimum.
4) There must be a willingness to take risks. I'm not talking
about foolhardiness, but carefully calculated risks. You should
not risk more than you can afford to lose, but you can't afford
not to take certain business risks.
One prime reason that many never take the plunge and attempt
to develop their own business is that they are afraid of taking
risk -- risk which could result in failure. However, failure
has often been a stepping stone to success.
5) An entrepreneur must deliver good quality products and
services and stand behind one's work. Related to that is good
customer service.
One is not only in business for one's self. Even if your place
of business is far removed from where your customers are
located (such as through the global business reach that can be
achieved with the Internet), you still have a responsibility
toward your customers, and if you have employees, to them as
well.
6) The business person should be on the lookout for ways to
improve their goods and services, as well ways to increase
efficiency and expand their marketing reach.
I've just revealed a handful of universal principles of
business success. Look around you and see if you can't detect
if they are being applied by ultra-successful businesses that
you're aware of. No doubt you'll see them used by the
majority. If you apply them, they can contribute toward your
own business success, as well.

FINALLY had some time to really go through the material in this course,
and our delay probably COST US TRAFFIC to our own sites. With a

highlighting passages and scribbling notes to myself for things I need
to do immediately to have an impact on my own traffic. Yes, there were
things I do already, but you know what, even the proverbial blind
cyber-hog is finding an acorn here or there, so that was expected.

Mixed Bag:: Editor's Ramblings
*NetWork Solutions, the dot.com people, are going to stop accepting
your IOUs for new domain names. They are attacking the problem of
domain squatters who pounce on names and hope to resell before the
InterNic fee is due. Probably a good idea, but probably not really
needed. Despite protestations to the contrary, there are LOTS of
dot.com names available that will work. My 2 cents.
*GoToWorld announce its CPM rate this week..a dismal $2.05.
That will not inspire some of us who have been early supporters.
You will recall that I warned you that I believed bad news
might have been in the works. It was. The good news is a
much improved user information center and promises of professionals
who will increase CPMs in months to come. We will see. We
hope so.
*Elsewhere, DeskTopDollars finally rolled out its software,
THEN suddenly told users that "overwhelming" server activity
would require some down time. There were some complaints
about how well the software was working, but as with GoToWorld,
it is early.
*Still elsewhere, ItAdsUp and 1Navigator popped up out of
nowhere. 1Navigator seems to be a pay per click version, and
the software is ready now. ItAdsUp looks more promising for
money for you and I, but the software is in the works for

Ads Not Pulling? Don't Blame the Publisher Yet!
Ad Writer's Tips and Tricks

We all work hard to write that hot prospect pulling ad
but many times we get little or no response at all. Publishers
take alot of heat when it comes to this problem. Just the other
day I listened as an ezine publisher told a story of a guy who
wanted all his money back when his ad didn't pull. Should the
publisher give a refund?
For many years I was an advertising consultant in the mail order
industry. I heard so many people complain about how bad so and so
publication was and how it didn't pull any or very few responses.
Sometimes, people never consider that their ad may have been to
blame for the outcome. As advertisers, we need to shoulder the
responsibility. We need to understand that to write ads that pull,
means learning another profession or at least learning the bare
basics so our advertising is not in vain. Read on and you can
discover a formula used for decades by successful copywriters.
First, think about words for a moment. Think about how powerful
they can be. Words.... so powerful they can cause people to fight
or a whole country to go to war.
Words make us laugh and they can make us cry but they can also make
people buy! Ads written with a proven formula and with the right
words can pull responses like crazy. If the ad is in a place where it
can be read for years, the responses will just keep coming. One of my
best ads was placed in mail order publications back in 1993 and today
I still get responses to that particular ad everyday! Here is that ad:

This ad was written using the basic formula that most copywriters use.
The fact is, that anyone can use this formula and when you do, you will
see measurable results. Here is the formula:
attract - Attention
generate - Interest
stimulate - Desire
ask for - Action
When people are scanning ads, and their eyes move across your ad, you
only have a few seconds, if that, to capture their attention. The
first objective is to write a headline that can attract the reader's
'Attention'. This is the first step of the four part
formula for writing successful ads. You want it to be your ad that
grabs the reader's attention. You may have to write pages of different
headlines to get one that stands out from the rest but this is really
a small price to pay and can make the difference between success and
failure.
Start by writing down the main benefit of your product or service.
A benefit is something that fills a need in the reader's life. It may
be more money or better health. It maybe a service that saves valuable
time or just makes life easier in some way. When you know what your
main benefit is, start writing headlines using power words to emphasize
and magnify your main benefit. Before you begin, it would be wise to
read ads for the purpose of learning to write ads. You will start to
see the big differences between ads.... from the bland to the downright
compelling! One person might write 'Eggs for Sale' but the next person
may make his eggs sound so much better even if the eggs are identical!
'Farm Fresh Eggs for Sale!' Now don't those eggs sound much better?
Once you have a headline that you feel can grab the reader's attention,
your next job is to develop 'Interest and Desire'. As with most ads,
you will have to do this with a limited amount of words so don't waste
them! The reader of your ad should be persuaded that what you offer
will solve one of their problems. Let them know that your Herbal Pain
Relief Formula really will give them a pain free life once again!
Use power words to emphasize the benefits they will get if they respond
to your ad. Solve one of the reader's problems with words and your are
just about there!
One of the biggest mistakes made by ad writers is when they fail to ask
the reader to take 'action'. If you have a Herbal Pain Formula website,
you might close the ad by writing 'To End Your Pain - Click Here! If
you want the person to respond by email, by phone or to write to you,
tell them how to respond. If you don't tell them to respond they
probably won't! Here's how an ad for a herbal pain formula might read:

To End Your Pain - Click Here Now!
Ad writing or copywriting is an art and you can't learn it all from
any one article. But if you will seek out the information and spend
some time at developing this art, you can see a difference in your
response rates. With time, you may even write an award winner that
could pull for years to come!
