I don’t know about you but I am more than sick and tired
of all the hyper-cyber shams, scams and flim-flams circulating

Mixed Bag:: Editor's Ramblings

*I continue to be impressed with a service and frankly I cannot
understand why more folks are not using this service on their
web pages. I have been in contact with a number of sites for
various reasons, and I see that many, many web pages give NO
EASY way to send their page to friends. We have offered a free
suggestion service, which we still fully support, for people
with smalller amounts of traffic. In fact, we have recently
created a Spanish version, which is beginning to spread into
Spanish language pages. BUT, why Mr. and Ms. Webmaster, do you
refuse to add this service which is also free to your site?
"It is too much for my visitors to do." Really? How about when
they cut/paste URLs into email addresses? Is that easier? Nope.
Recently added to this service is intelligent memory. That is
what I call it. Don't know if there is really a term for it.
When you use this service for a second time, NOW you will find
a list of everyone you have sent suggestions to before. Once
you enter your little group of friends that you love to send
URLs to into the program, you are done. Nothing more required
the next time you find a page using this same service. (Bet
Recommend-It, the suggestion service King Kong, will be adding
this to their service too). They should. It makes using the
service that much easier,and every improvement that makes it
easier means what for you and I? More traffic. "Oh, I don't
want my visitors to be assaulted by a sales pitch." Oh, really?
Then I suppose you are running a site with no affiliate links,
no banner exchange ads, and you are really on the net for fun
not profit? OK, maybe so. We certainly need lots of sites on
the net without a profit motive. Maybe you do not think your
site has the traffic required to make this profitable? OK, so
if you use the service and get paid and get more traffic, even
if it is just one dollar more income and 1 visitor more, that
would be bad? Take a moment to see what you are missing, or
stop telling me how hard it is to make a profit online. This
is found money for anyone who uses this service. Get details

On the "surf/get paid" front this week: Crew Design, who claim
they will use your computer's power while you are OFFLINE to make
money, claim to be reworking their site. It has been in the NOT
suggested group for some time on our comparison page at
http://stealthpromotions.com/pts-table.htm Elsewhere, GoToWorld
is still licking their chops for the VERY poor showing on CPM and
I think they are moving in the wrong direction which is a shame
since I had a good number of referrals with them. Meanwhile, the
true leader, AllAdvantage has announced officially that signup and
download of the software can all take place immediately. I tested
it this week and from start to finish, including downloading software
and installation took about 5 minutes. That is GREAT news because
every new member in your group will start putting cash in your pocket.
Still elsewhere, Utopiad sent me an invitation to download their
ad delivery software, which I refuse to do...Just checking to see
if you are reading. LOL. I have started to use it, and it looks
great. It is movable, a bit smaller than the AA bar, and it appears
to give real time stats on earnings. Recall they are paying a portion
of ad revenues, and like GoToWorld, they will need to get reasonable
money for those ads to do well. I have seen many of the same banners
as I see with AA, so I think they are already doing well. Besides,
they watched the misstep by GTW, and they do not want to follow that
path. The only bad news with them is that we are still really beta
stage with the software. I got mine because I am an early member, but
yours will be due out soon. Meanwhile, still elsewhere, DeskTop Dollars
keeps telling us how much better version two of its software is compared
to version one. I am not convinced, yet. Spedia this week has started
to cancel some accounts for "unusual" behavior, but no elaboration on
what that means. They do NOT mean SPAM, but have yet to answer questions.
Still elsewhere, DotAd and ValuePay and AllCommunity are making strides
in the right direction and still are very much worth joining. DealVeiwer
who has also been rated as NOT suggested wrote to say some things will be
happening with them, but I am in the wait and see mode. Utopiad and
AllAdvantage lead this competitive pack and you can join all FREE.

Kill The Counter and Start Tracking!
You can invest huge amounts of money and time in promoting your
web site, but you need to know where your traffic and sales are coming
from to make it effective. Many webmasters just place a counter onto
their web site. All this does is tell you how many people have seen your
site. It doesn't tell you where they came from, what browsers they were
using, what keywords they searched for at a search engine, etc. To be
able to effectively market your web site and to receive the greatest amount
of results, you must track your visitors.
There are many ways this can be done. There are programs available
like WebTrends, Web Site Reporter, etc. Many hosting providers have a
program like this or something similar, but you are probable going to have
to buy their higher service plans to receive it. If your hosting provider doesn't
offer a statistics program that you like, or you just want to use something
else, then there are many other ways to track your web site.
There are many free services available online that will tell you a great
detail of information. The catch is you have to place their banner on your
web site so their software is able to track your visitors. This is one reason
why I do not suggest this way of tracking your web site. It not only looks
unprofessional, it also gives your visitors another chance to leave your web
site. Why give someone else your business? If you would rather use an
online service, then the one I suggest is: http://www.extreme-dm.com/tracking/
That one is probable the best one available and you only have to put a small
button on your web site.
The best and most cost effective way to track your web site is you can
install a CGI script onto your web site's server. This is how I track my web
site and the only way I recommend doing. You will need to have a CGI-BIN
and to be able to add scripts to it. If you are not sure if you have full access
to your CGI-BIN, then you need to ask your web hosting provider. There are
many free CGI scripts available online that can do as many features as the
top software programs that sell for 600 dollars. You can get access to over
50 CGI scripts here:

The best script I have seen is the AXS. It is the very first script at the
above web site. It will probable take you about 30 minutes to read all
the information and to install the script, but it is well worth the time. Here
are some of the features that this script tells you:
- Abbreviated Browser (Netscape 3.X)
- Operating System (Windows95)
- First Level Domains (imsnewsletter.com)
- Hits from Other Sites (Full URL)
- Hyperlinks Followed From Your Site
- Hits to Your Web Pages
- Average Number of Hits Per Visitor
- Hits By Day of Year
- Hits By Day of the Week
- Much Much More!
Now you can start tracking your web site and found out where your visitors
are coming from and what is most effective.
One thing you might want to do is ask your customers a few questions when
they place an order. For example, you can ask them how they found your web
site and what was their main decision for choosing you. This will also help
you know what is most effective for your business and what exactly your
customers want and expect.
