First, I want to wish you and yours a safe and happy
Thanksgiving. I hope you are all able to enjoy the

We decided to trim the fat from the home page this week.
Dropped the load time from about 18-20 (at 28.8 modem
speeds) down to about 6 seconds. We are following some
advice that warns webmasters that the average patience
level among new visitors continues to shrink. By grouping
parts of our 150+ pages into more defined groups, we
offer the same things in smaller parts. Come by to
see what you think. Give us your feedback. The links
are still moving around, and pages will fill back up, but
the end results should be better.

I do not know if the lower "fat" content of the site is
doing it, or if Rick Beneteau's book is that good (which it
is) but we have been pleased to be an associate selling the

Secret Tracking Tricks for Internet Marketing

A surprising number of Internet marketers I speak to don't
have a clue when it comes to tracking their results. Many
of them who analyze their logs still don't use all of the
easy tools at their disposal for keeping track of where
their traffic is coming from.

If this is you, don't feel bad. We've all been there.

Now, assuming that you are analyzing your logs and doing
so with a tool that will tell you the path people travel
through your site (if not - start now), then you are faced
with these two tricky problems:

1. How do I track the effectiveness of my email campaigns?
You'll notice that a great number of hits to your site are
"no referrer" traffic. That is, people that found your site
either by reading an email or just typing in your URL.

2. Knowing that not all hits are equal (a visitor from one
site may be more likely to buy than one from another) how do
I know which hits are generating sales for me?

These two problems can both be solved using a simple tracking
method that requires no scripting. The only tool you need is
your log analysis tool which I hope you already have.

The first step to this technique capitalizes on two little
known features of HTML:

Fact 1:

Whenever you add a ? to the end of a .htm or .html page, it
has absolutely no effect on the page that gets called up.
That is, if you were to write:

http://www.foreverweb.com/freesoftware.htm
or

http://www.foreverweb.com/freesoftware.htm?campaign1
The exact same page will come up. Go ahead and try it now.
Pretty cool, right?

WARNING:

You have to append this "?" after the name of an HTML file.
It won't always work if you do it at the end of a domain name
(unless your server supports it or you have special scripting -
which is what we're trying to avoid - you want something
universal and easy, right?)

Fact 2:

Even though the same page is served when you do this, your
server logs treat them as two different pages!

So, every time someone clicks on that special URL you will
be able to know without question.

Now, how can you use this in your marketing?

A *great* many ways, but let me touch on some of the most
important ones. By the time we're done you'll be on fire
with new ideas for your marketing.

Here are a few to get you started:

1. Email

Remember how we talked about the problem of tracking email
campaigns? This is the solution. You simply create a unique
code for each email campaign you have (no, I don't mean
spam - I'm talking about legitimate OPT-IN marketing here)
and then track the results in your log files. This will not
just tell you how many clicks the campaign generated - it will
also give you a good idea about how many people ordered as
well. That is, you look at your report of "paths traveled
through site" and pay attention to the path people took as a
result of that particular campaign.

For example, if you see many instances of:

(The numbers show the order in which people viewed your pages -
this is the "path traveled through site".)

1. http://killertactics.com/index.htm?ad1
2. http://killertactics.com/page1.htm
3. https://killertactics.com/order.htm

And relatively fewer instances of:

1. http://killertactics.com/index.htm?ad2
2. http://killertactics.com/page1.htm
3. https://killertactics.com/order.htm

Then it is safe to assume ad1 is more effective than ad2, even
if ad2 brought in more raw traffic.

Remember, not all hits are equal, right?

2. Banner Campaigns

The same principle applies here. Just give each campaign a
unique code and you will be able to track the effectiveness
exactly as you have above.

WARNING #2:

This is not a perfect system. You need to look at your actual
number of orders and see if there is some congruence between
your number of order page visits and your number of orders.

Also, there is a more effective way to track this. Simply get
some referral partner tracking software and assign a different
referral code to each campaign. Then you will no without question
that the order came as a result of the campaign.

However, referral partner software can be difficult to set up if
you're not a CGI wiz and the best systems aren't cheap.

What I'm offering you here is an inexpensive way to track your
campaigns that only requires:

a. Your Imagination
b. A Log File Analysis Program

Can you think of some ways to immediately apply this technique
to your marketing today? I challenge you to take the rest of
the day refining your marketing effort using these techniques.
You will be delighted at the new insights you are shown. I bet
you will be surprised to find out which of your campaigns are
winners.

9,999 free Compaqs to someone else, and one to me, comes another
website with the same idea. Giving away 333 Cyrix(R) desktops with
free Internet access and a 15 monitor included is the latest entrant,
http://www.freedesktops.com/ Like freepc.com (who are still giving
theirs away too) you will be served a constant diet of advertising,
you will commit to at least 12 hours of use in a month, and they will
be watching you. Still the website says its goal is to give a free
PC to everyone who applies. Drop by today, and you might be able to
wrap up your new computer in time to put it under the Christmas tree
for yourself. FreeDesktops says they intend to offer upgraded new
computers to users following the 36 months agreement period. In theory
you might never have to buy another computer yourself again.

This might be a way for my Mac subscribers to wean themselves from Mac
addiction. BUT, Mac subscribers can rejoice, read on. AllAdvantage is
now looking to get you into their very large tent.

Not that you would need free Internet access with the FreeDesktops.com
offer, but there is now another NetZero-like offer. NetZero will give
you dial-up access when you agree to see their ads. Entering that
competition now is FreeI.com, http://www.freei.com They will put you on
the net for free using their software (which will serve you ads). In
keeping with this week's theme, you can use this service whether you
have a normal computer or are using a Mac *smile* Just kidding, not
about the service, just about the Macs. Don't flame me for what is
intended to be good-natured ribbing.

Surfing for pay this week:

Attention Mac users! AllAdvantage is looking for YOU.
They need some beta testers for the viewbar, and are ready
to give it to you. Finally, AllAdvantage is opening up its
terrific program to Mac folks. I know it took some time, but
your wait is over. Hopefully, some of the other programs will
be getting out Mac versions of the software soon, but no official
word from any of the others, although you can join Ignifuge and
ValuePay, which offer programs that are not operating system
dependent.

We are still VERY pleased with the results we are getting from
recent partnership relationships we have established for AA.
Our healthy growth in downline membership is something ANYONE
can copy by following the advice we have given in the last few
weeks. Hope you are paying attention and getting good results
too.

Bursting onto the scene this week is BigReferral who claims
to have $10 Million to hand out to you when you tell your
friends about this program. Their referral link is too

The payout rate is $1 per referral signed up to level three,
then $.50 for level 4 and 5, then $.25 past that to infinity.
There is no cost to join so I figure you might as well help

4, then 10% on level 5.

Also new to us this week is getting lots of Qool Coins for being
an early adapter. These folks are in pre-launch and there are

I am looking forward to getting the little Piggy from ValuePay
going. I suspect that I will be able to download and use the
long-awaited ad-serving software that fits into your Explorer
or Navigator browser.

DeskTop Horizons has accepted yours truly as a beta tester for
its software. We shall see how it does.

ItAdsUp sent out its second newsletter. The site has been
re-worked and the "pcbar" is reportedly beyond alpha testing
and doing well. Beta testing is now scheduled for mid December.
These folks are on the move, and worth a look.

As promised last week, CashMap is "up and paying". You are
basically paid to visit and participate with a variety of links.

GoToWorld has been active of late, sending out gift certificates,
and such. An improvement yes, but dismal rates leaves this off
the list of my suggested programs. Hate to leave 500+ referrals
in the downline, but at $2-6 CPM, it is not wise to spend too
much time on this compared to other programs.

Hitmaster, er, BXnet continues to struggle with the transition.
I have them listed on my page with a 1/2 million advertising
links, but am not holding my breath.

FROM YOUR NATURAL MARKET?

I have a friend who is one of the top sales producers with a
large life insurance company. Tony was born in Italy and
grew up near Naples. He moved to the US about 15 years ago.
He was immediately hired by his present company because he
had prior experience selling insurance to US military
personnel in Italy.

Tony soon discovered that a large number of Italian
restaurant owners in the US city where he now lived were
from a small village outside of Naples. Not only did they
speak Italian, they spoke his dialect. It wasn't long before
Tony was getting most of his business from these Italian
restaurant owners. Nobody else can duplicate the 'natural'
relationship he has with them. It's the primary reason why
Tony became one of the top producers in his company.

Tony's relationship with his clients illustrates the
powerful advantage of capitalizing on a 'natural market'.

WHAT IS A NATURAL MARKET?

A natural market is the portion of your target market that
shares a unique personal characteristic with you. It
automatically creates a relationship between you and a
prospect in your target market for a PERSONAL reason. For
example:

Let's say you're a teacher or have been a teacher in the
past. You're also a distributor for an MLM company selling
healthcare products. You define your target market as people
interested in preserving or improving their health and who
are also interested in a business opportunity. Some of those
prospects have the ADDITIONAL CHARACTERISTIC of being
teachers or former teachers, just like you. That's a natural
market for you. You can communicate with them on a special
personal basis.

BENEFITS OF A NATURAL MARKET

Potential customers are more receptive when they share a
common background or a special interest with you. It's human
nature to feel secure when doing business with someone we
believe is just like us. This is especially helpful for
promoting business on the Internet because prospects can't
see or hear you 'live'.

HOW TO FIND YOUR BEST NATURAL MARKET

Start by making a list of different things you've done in
your life. For example:

* What professions or occupations are you engaged in (now or
previously)?
* What hobbies or crafts do you actively participate in?
* What special interest clubs or associations are you
actively involved with?
* Do you have a unique national origin or speak a foreign
language (like my friend, Tony)?
* What unique special background or special experiences do
you have?

Each item on your list may represent a natural market you
can use. However, some will have more impact than others.
The greater the uniqueness of the common characteristic, the
more leverage it provides. Select the one with the most
unique characteristic to use first.

Your natural market is a more focused definition of your
primary target market. Once you identify a natural market,
start using it in your advertising. Revise your present
sales material to create special sales material specifically
appealing to your natural market. Use the same marketing
tactics you've been using but expand them to include this
new segment of your target market. You'll unlock a
completely new layer of business hidden in your existing
target market.
