Hello everyone. I am so glad to be back in the saddle
again with you guys. It seems so long since I last wrote
to you. Why it seems like that was way back...in the ..
last century. hehehe. Tired of that joke yet? Me too.
We spent some time in Santa Fe, New Mexico for the holidays.
Lovely, peaceful and restful (except for the time I was
fighting for online time - mental note, next year must have
two or more phone lines.) I did get to see some snow for
the first time in a looong time, which I enjoyed. We were
glad to be away, but are now ready to get back to work.

*Wow, it wasn't Y2K, but felt like it. The Paidforsurf veiwbar
software locked up the computer about an hour ago, and guess who
had not saved his work? Guilty, grrrr, #@%#. There is a lesson
there for you guys.
*Can they really do that? Tell me if you have heard about this
one. A new company is proposing to provide you with FREE DSL
service starting in April. Free. They are going to pay for it
with ads sent to you via the software used for the DSL. I do
not know if they can really make it financially doing this, but
one look at Amazon tells you that profit is not the main goal
with dot coms at first. Like the little piggy I am, I lined up

The Rules of Website Coherency

Let's take a little test.
Imagine you are surfing a website. You are
looking for an exact piece of information.
Now imagine you have to navigate through an
incomprehensible maze of text and bizarre links.
After 30 tedious seconds of this, imagine what you
would do next.
If you're like me, you'd just hit the back button
and go away. Who needs it, right? I barely have
enough time to eat lunch. Where am I going to
find the time to pour through an incomprehensible
site that may, or may not, have what I need?
This is a common problem on the net. Even sites
that are otherwise well-designed often miss the
mark here.
Take a moment right now and look at your site. Is
it easy to navigate? This exercise requires quite
a bit of honesty. You have to step outside
yourself. What makes sense to you may or may not
make sense to someone else.
Wouldn't it be nice to have some hard and fast
rules, here? To ensure your site always makes
sense to the surfer, you can do one of two things
(or both):
1. Provide a linear path that takes you through
the site step by step.
2. Provide a non-linear navigational structure
that is:
This site employs both of the above examples. It
provides a linear path through the site in the
form of an article. Since the purpose of this
site is to sell a product, providing a linear path
is an extremely effective choice.
However, what if someone visits the site and has a
particular question? For example, they might say:
"Look, I just want to download the software."
That is where the non-linear navigational
structure comes in. Take a look at the above site
again. You'll see that the "nav-bar" (the series
of buttons on the left that tell you what else is
available on the site) has the following three
features:
1. It is easy to understand. By looking at the
label of each button, you immediately know what
you will see if you click on it.
2. It is easily recognizable. That is, it is
where you would expect to find it. The person
looking to download or purchase the item will
immediately know where to go.
3. It is consistent. On each page, the nav-bar is
in the same position. That is, you don't have to
hunt for it each time.
No matter what type of content you have on your
site, you should follow these rules to make
surfing easier. If you can find another way to
ensure your site is easy to surf, then go for it!
However, these rules will provide a ready guide
for you. Apply them to your site now and your
repeat visits will increase dramatically.

Can you say, did the bribe work?
A leftover lump of coal this week for paidforsurf's software
which obliterated the first version of this newsletter.
Another lump of coal to GetPaid4 who seem to have their whole site
freeze up from time to time. When they return, the stats are mixed
up, or worse, like mine, missing. Sure it is beta, and early, but
these guys were banner dealers before they got out on the street.
Were they not watching or learning anything? We'll see.
AllAdvantage took no chances over the New Year's holiday, shutting
down for a some of that time. Maybe overly cautious, but understandable
with about 4 million members ready to pull up stats with a drink in
their hand January 1. They now feature a one button download version
of the software, and they are working hard to keep bugs out. I continue
to be a fan, and urge you to get in. There is still time. Not joining
now is like saying, "that kid Dell will never get out of his dorm room,
why should I buy his stock." Lots of room for growth and referrals.
People who started as late as August and October are up to 1000 referrals
which helps increase your income, if they are your referral. How about you?
Value Pay's Piggy WAS due out a century ago it seems. I got mine, then it
mutated to just bits and bytes, so I deleted it. More recently, I was
able to get past the gate-keeper to download it again. I know I installed
it properly, but it seems to be not quite ready for public release. Reports
are that it hides while open (there is an icon that will disappear when you
move your mouse over it). Every once in a while, it just pops up. It you
are breathlessly waiting for the Piggy, take a breath, despite the web site
hype, this one will take a bit longer to perfect.
Elsewhere:
GoToWorld says rates are still increasing. We are still not impressed.
CashSurfers has failed to provide information that allows me to enter the
member site. That is not good.
DeskTop Dollars software is still not flexible and we are waiting with it.
Utopiad is improving both its rate and reporting, and we hope that continues.
PayBar let me join right away, but I can't get the software to work.
GetPaid4 software works better than it keeps stats..much better.
DeskTop Horizons little, movable software is doing well with test ads.
Spedia announced an incentive plan to reward members who use their software
for two hours per day at least twenty days per month.
PrizeWindow works OK, but we have not used it much, as I have to get some
work done while surfing and I need the desktop space.
Qool sold me 4 increments of 30 minutes of free long distance but I could
not use the site to get the cards sent to me, and no one has responded to
emails asking for help. The time was "bought" with Qool coins, my reward
for surfing or referring. Maybe I would rather have the money.
BePaid crashed my computer last year, and I have not tried to use it again,
but it is on my list for some time soon.
I will give more feedback on how I like these programs as I get to them over
the next few weeks.
Utopiad, DeskTop Dollars, Paidforsurf, CashSurfers, PayBar, GoToWorld, AllAdvantage,
VIP, mValue, GetPaid4, ItAdsUp, DeskTop Horizons,Spedia, PaysU, PrizeWindow,
CashMap, Surfing2Cash, Qool and BePaid ALL have software out. Clearly we are
moving from waiting for software to budgeting time with the various programs.
Companies who produce software that is bulky or missing or unmanageable are
likely to be gone by this time next year.

HOW TO REVERSE A "SLUMP" IN BUSINESS -- FAST

Every business experiences cycles of heavy sales volume and
light sales volume. Periods of light sales volume are called
business "Slumps".
Some business slumps are predictable. Every landscaping
service expects a slump in landscaping jobs during winter
months. Their usual strategy to maintain a flow of business
in the winter is to promote a different service such as snow
removal. For most businesses, however, slumps occur without
warning and for no apparent reason.
Some slumps occur when you're spending the most time, money
and effort on promoting business. When that happens, it's
easy to panic and start replacing proven methods of
promoting business with speculative ideas. This reaction is
especially hazardous for a small business struggling to
grow. I know a business owner who almost lost her business
when she panicked and reacted to a slump in business by
suddenly changing all of her proven advertising messages.
I've experienced many business slumps over the years.
Eventually I developed a simple procedure I can implement
quickly to replace the business lost during a slump. You can
copy this same procedure to reverse your business slumps
when they occur.
The first thing to do when a slump occurs is to accept it as
part of a normal business pattern. It isn't signaling the
end of your business. Don't panic. But don't be complacent
either. Give the problem your immediate attention. Begin by
taking the following steps.
TRY TO IDENTIFY A CAUSE FOR THE SLUMP
Determine if you can identify something specific likely to
be causing the slump. For example:
** A recent change in your advertising or promotional
activity.
** A direct competitor recently rolled out a huge new
advertising campaign.
** A major news event had a negative impact on your
industry... such as the announcement of a government
investigation of business practices in your industry.
You can develop a strategy to reverse the effects of a slump
when you can identify a specific cause for it. Usually you
won't be able to identify a specific cause. That's because
there is none. Most slumps are temporary and will eventually
reverse themselves. However, don't ignore the problem and
wait for it to go away. It may take a long time and you can
lose a lot of business while you're waiting.
WHEN THERE IS NO OBVIOUS CAUSE FOR THE SLUMP
When a slump doesn't have an obvious cause, it's what I call
a "normal" business slump. I've found the best way to
overcome a normal business slump is to take immediate action
to develop additional business fast. The additional business
supplements the current light flow of business and
eliminates the impact of the slump.
Here are 4 actions I take immediately when I realize I'm in
a slump. You can implement these same 4 actions in your
business to reverse the effects of a business slump.
1. Develop a special offer for existing customers/clients.
Use a short deadline so they must take immediate action or
forfeit the special offer. Advise them of the special offer
using a fast but inexpensive method of communication such as
email, faxes, postcards or even phone calls.
2. Advise your recent prospects who did not take buying
action of the same special offer. Use the same fast,
inexpensive methods of communication listed above.
3. Call your best customers and ask for their help. Explain
that business is slow and you want to use the time to
approach some potential new customers/clients. Ask them for
referrals.
4. Temporarily increase advertising in media where it is
seen immediately (or almost immediately). For example,
website and ezine ads, newspaper ads, First Class direct
mail or postcards, radio spots, etc.
Business slumps can be beneficial. Sometimes a temporary
action you take to reverse a slump is so effective you
decide to continue it after recovering from the slump. The
result is a permanent increase in your volume of business.
