"Internet Marketing What Works, What Doesn’t"

Surprisingly, with now having come full bloom into the
new Millennium, there are still many people marketing
their businesses, products, or services, haphazardly on
the Internet. These same individuals are, yet, under the
assumption that they will soon realize phenomenal
success.

Therefore, I am providing some facets of online
marketing through a listing of what works, and what
doesn’t, though not in any certain order of importance.

What Works:

1. "Discussion Lists" Great for marketing. You simply
join the ones that interest you, or relate to what you are
doing, then post messages to them, generally, in
response to queries from others seeking assistance. To
make your post most effective, you should previously
have attached your 4-6-line signature file so that it also
posts along with your message. Drawback:
Occasionally, some people will differ with your point of
view. Note: "Onelist" (http://www.onelist.com) appears
to be the most predominant online site for providing
discussion lists.

2. "Opt-In Direct Email" This is the process whereby
you rent a particular list of people who, most likely, will
have an interest in your business, product, or service.
There are services on the Internet that provide this set-
up, with Postmaster Direct, seemingly the leader at
(http://www.postmasterdirect.com). This type of service
specializes in getting your sales message to people who
have specifically signed up with the service to receive
advertising messages. The benefit is that you can tightly
target your market without guesswork, while also
eliminating "flames." Drawback: There is a charge for
this service, and you may wish to utilize it after
implementing the "free" methods first.

3. "Ezine Articles" If you have a flair for writing, and
can provide useful and needy content to publishers and
editors, this is an excellent way to market your business,
product, or service by providing, once again, your 4-6
line signature file at the end of your article.

4. "Search Engines" Great if you have your own web
site. Make sure your main or home page that you
register, reflects the name of your business, product, or
service within the title tags of your page’s source code,
as this is what search engines seek in order to rank your
site. Drawback: Your site will not be published for, at
least, 4-6 weeks after registration and you must re-
register accordingly in order to remain close to the top.

5. "Links" Good for marketing. Just insure that the
content, business, products, or services of other sites
that you link with, are related, and complement, but do
not conflict with that of your own.

6. "News Releases" If you can provide a great news
angle on your business, product, or service, news
releases can produce phenomenal results, if online
publishers and editors decide to use them in their
publications. This is due to the significant number of
subscribers that they can carry, often numbering in the
thousands. This can have a double impact if you also
provide your news release to related offline publishers
and editors as most print publications also now have an
online presence as well.

7. "Announcement Sites" Great for a one-time effect,
as there is also a significant number of people online
who are members of "what’s new" sites and have
specifically signed up to receive notices on what
becomes new on the Internet. Online Announcement
Sites are akin to having an offline Grand Opening for a
brick and mortar store, with one exception the online
Grand Opening is open to the worldwide public.

8. "Ezine Ads" Great tool, IF you get your business,
product, or service in a related publication, WITH a
"decent" subscriber base. Drawback: Though ads are
relatively inexpensive, they do cost and, again, should
follow your utilization of "free" methods.

9. "Ezine Publishing" An excellent way to gain loyal
customers and subscribers IF you offer needed and
desirable content. This can also have a reciprocal effect
if you also have a web site, as you can promote your
Ezine on your web site and, likewise, promote your web
site within your Ezine.

10. "Ezine Publisher Ad Swaps" A good marketing tool
to attract subscribers who might not otherwise learn of
you. Drawback: In order to "swap" ads, many publishers
demand or expect a certain number of subscribers to
your Ezine.

What Doesn’t Work

1. "Newsgroups" Tricky in regard to commercial
marketing. Most people have an adversity to any degree
of commercial promotion, and some will "flame."

2. "Classified Ad Sites" Hundreds, and even
thousands, of free ads posted, much like in the
Classified sections of print newspapers. Additionally,
you must post often. In order to even get an inkling of a
notice, you must pay for your ad that will still be placed
in the company of many more related ads. Highly
ineffective. Forget about them enough said.

3. "Bulletin Boards" See Newsgroups above.

4. "Message Boards" A 50/50 Chance of success
at NOT being "flamed," depending on the board’s subject
matter.

5. "Untargeted Bulk Email" The absolute WORST
thing you can do on the Internet period other than
"Hacking."

If you are new to Internet Marketing, perhaps this
information will provide you with a better roadmap in
kick-starting a successful online promotional campaign.

Likewise, for seasoned online marketers, perhaps you
will find some of the above points useful in fine-tuning
your efforts even more so.

It is not a secret that I have been involved with the "get
paid to surf" programs lately. That is obvious. One of the
most frequently asked questions is, "How do I promote X or Y
program?" This may be especially hard if you are not running
your own web site somewhere. This week I joined a program
that proposes to fix that problem. This quick-loading
organized page has gathered most of the bigger surf programs
and some paid email and/or click programs altogether into
one page. The presentation is just kind of matter of fact,
not a lot of hype. There could be more information to help
evaluate the programs, but I liked it enough to spend some

with more personal information, more opinion, but I think this

Surfing for pay this week:

mValue is converting from "contest" to CASH stage on 1/24/00
That is the day after the current membership drive/contest
ends. There is STILL time to get enough referrals to qualify

I continue to think this is one of the stars of the field at
the moment, and look forward to the switch to cash.

AllAdvantage shipped out its neato new browser to A+ members.
The one-click download/install was great. The ViewBar is a
bit more sleek in its latest beta form. I have not had any
problems with it so far, but only had for a while today. No
wonder they have signed up over 5,000,000 members. If they
can just release checks in a timely fashion for this month,
they should be on their way to better things in 2000.

GetPaid4 seems to be on track with their stats this week. My
information was restored for December and January (although
November may be gone forever.) That is better, and pushes them
back up in my opinion near the top. They are paying a good
rate and available all over. Still, stable stats are a must.

ItAddsUp is releasing its software..if you can get through to
the site. Seems the pent up demand for more ad delivery software
is putting the server(s) under a strain. Perhaps give it a few
days.

I have been pleased so far with the CashSurfer program. Points
are adding up, and I continue to hear great things, including
the arrival of checks. This one is still new, so plenty of room
for growth. I recommend it, if you are not in yet.

Hour for hour, dollar per dollar, Ignifuge seems to be way ahead
of the competition. Recall that they want up to 10 visits per day
to their useful homepage. If you do not do anything more than hit
that page and run, you can be there and gone in seconds, and they
allow a number of bookmarks which makes it easy to use them as a
launching pad. Payrates were still good for December, and some
members earned over $100 for using their page for a bit over an
hour in total (at 15 seconds per visit X 10 X30 days). Not bad,
and definitely worth your while.

Desktop Dollars is ready for mass release, but the payrates make
this one you can wait for so far. Meanwhile, DeskTop Horizon
is looking for more beta testers and might be worth your time.
Elsewhere, GoToWorld is still suffering MAJOR credibility problems.
ePIPO software is coming out in a monitored fashion, but some
users (including me) wonder if the points are being added correctly.
Good things are being heard about PaysU, with international access
growing. Utopiad has its software out too, but the payrate is not
exciting, despite recent announcements to improve it. The sleek
Piggy from ValuePay continues to be MIA, wonder when the next upgrade
is due (now!).

Several NEW programs added this week, be sure to check what I
liked enough to add.

Links: "Why You Need Them and How to Get Them."

How many websites are linked to your site?

100, 1000, 10,000?

A recent check at linkpopularity.com showed that Yahoo has
over one million links sprawled across the web. That's a lot
of links.

And while reaching that milestone at your site may seem
impossible, it is important to at least grow your links
regularly. The number will have a direct affect on your
website traffic in many ways. Here's an example...

Lately I've noticed a steady increase in visitors coming to
my own site from search engines. But not just the ol' major
"big 8" search engines. Many newer search engines are now
directing fresh traffic to my site too.

New subscribers to my newsletter have reported finding my
site through newer engines like google.com, iwon.com, and
askjeeves.com.

But why? It's been a long time since I really put much
effort into my search engine ranking.

Well after a little research, my findings pointed directly
to one explanation... "Links."

At many search engines, new and old alike, the number of
quality links you have into your site plays a key role in
their relevancy algorithms. In a nutshell, the more sites
you have linking to yours (preferably related sites) the
higher your site will rank in their returns.

Thanks to my past and current linking efforts, my site now
has thousands of other sites linked to it. And you should be
striving for the same.

Why? Well actually it goes much deeper than the benefit you
gain at the search engines...

- Your best quality visitors will always come from links at
related sites. This is a fact of business online. And it is
one that will stand the test of time. Consider quality links
online, as the equivalent of "word of mouth referrals" in
the real world. When customers come by referral, there is
already a level of trust established, even before they get
to your store. That goes a long way in making sales.

- And yes, as my own findings show, links help your search
engine ranking more than you might imagine! It looks as
though this will continue to grow as a measuring stick at
most search engines. When link popularity plays a big role
at a search engine, the quality of the sites returned tends
to improve. Since that's a main goal of the search engines
in the first place, more and more are increasingly relying
on this as a measuring stick.

So what does all this mean for your website?

It means you need to learn how to get more links into your
site! But the plain truth is, getting good links ain't easy.

Growing the number of links into your site takes time. I've
been online since 1996 so time has been on my side. But even
if you are new to this arena, there are ways to speed up the
process. Here are three techniques you should consider
implementing as soon as possible...


1. Just Ask.

You can always just ask webmasters of related sites for a
link!

But before you do, be sure to visit the sites you plan to
contact and get the owner or webmaster's first name. Also
make sure they actually have a section of their site
dedicated to links. Then, send them a personal message
explaining why you feel a link swap would be _mutually_
beneficial.

If you see no links section at their site, investigate
further and see if a joint venture may be in order. That's
taking link swapping to the next level!


2. Use a Link Trading service.

I have never been a big fan of link swap services since the
few I've joined in the past have had too many drawbacks
including...

- unrelated and untargeted links in and out of my site
- banners that were too big, unsightly or slow-loading
- a swap credit system that rewarded the swap site first
- unproductive results

However, my outlook on link swap services improved this week
with the introduction of a new service from an old friend of
mine, Brian Welch of bizbot.net.

What I like best about his new, free link trading service is
that I can control what sites I link to, what my link looks
like and how many links I earn. The interface is slick and
attractive. But whether it works remains to be seen.

3. Pre-license your proprietary content to related sites.

This is about the best way I've been able to grow links into
my site. I recommend it highly for any webmaster who creates
content of their own, such as articles, industry tips and
the like.

Pre-licensing your content simply means allowing other
webmasters to use it for free. Their only obligation is to
include a link to your site. In the best case scenario, you
determine what the link looks like.

I do this at http://www.bizweb2000.com/articles.htm and at
every single article I've posted at my site. Webmasters
interested in solid content for their related site or ezine
can simply copy and paste my articles at will. All I ask is
that they keep my short footer with each article. In the
footer is a link to my site.

Pre-licensing your content creates a win-win situation. The
webmaster gets an informative article for their internet
marketing site and you get a relevant link into your site.


I hope the tips here help you grow the number of links into
your site. If you have proven methods that have been growing
