program. AOL will begin paying $50/subscriber to its huge
dial-up service. I suspect that most people smart enough
to avoid AOL to get online to see your web advertising will
NOT be interested, but you may be able to give away flyers
at your local computer dealer. I will not participate, but
you can. I can't sell or offer what I do not believe in,
and there are LOTS of questions of just what AOL is and will
become for me.

How To Convert Hits Into Sales

One of the common questions asked by web site owners is:
"I'm getting plenty of hits but no sales - what is going
on?" This article will give you some tips on how to address
this issue.

1. Your Product

The first area to review is the product or service that you
are offering. Does a market exist for it? To answer this
question you need to find out whether similar products are
being sold on the Internet successfully. If not, you may
need to rethink your Internet strategy. If others are
selling a similar product successfully, then this would tend
to confirm that there is a market for your product.

Next, look at the strategy and pricing being adopted by your
competitors. How do you compare? Why should your visitors
buy from you rather than one of your competitors? Answering
these questions will provide you with valuable information
you can use to improve your situation and generate more
sales.

Also, take a critical look at your product quality. Does it
live up to the claims you are making on your web pages? If
not, improve your product so that it does or modify your web
page to be more truthful about it.

2. Provide Solutions

Your visitors are looking for a solution to a problem. Do
you know what problems your visitors are looking for
solutions to? Does your web site show how your product will
solve your visitor's problem? You will need to put yourself
into your visitor's shoes to better understand what they are
seeking so that you can provide the solution they need.

One way to better understand your visitors is to monitor
where your visitors are coming from. If they are coming from
the search engines, knowing what search terms they are using
can provide some clues. You may find some surprises when you
review this information about your site. The tool I use to
capture this information is WebPosition Gold. More

Once you understand the problem your visitors want solved,
revise your web pages to show that your product will provide
the solution they need.

3. Site Design

Your site needs to look like it is a commercial web site
rather than an amateur home page. The design needs to be
consistent from page to page and it needs to be easy to
navigate. Contact details including physical address, phone
numbers and email address need to be shown.

Graphics need to be minimized to ensure that your page
downloads quickly. Also, ensure that your web host provides
a fast connection to the Internet. Most people will not wait
for a page that takes a long time to download. They will
just move on to your competitor.

Make it easy to order. I recall seeing statistics recently
that suggested that a large number of people abandon a web
site in the middle of the order process. A common reason for
this is that the order process is too time consuming and
complicated. Make yours simple and quick and you will lose
fewer sales.

Ensure that your web page has a strong headline that grabs
your visitors and makes them want to read more. Your
headline should in effect say "You have this problem, here
is the solution". Your web site should then demonstrate that
you understand the problem and that you can in fact provide
the solution.

4. Testimonials and Guarantees

Testimonials and guarantees can have a huge impact on your
level of sales. On the web, a key priority is to build
credibility. The common methods used are having a privacy
statement, publishing a newsletter, publishing testimonials
from satisfied customers and providing a strong guarantee.

Take every opportunity to gather comments from your
customers about how your product has helped them. Get their
permission to publish these comments as testimonials. If
need be, provide them with a gift for giving you their
permission to publish their comments. A way of getting
comments is a customer feedback survey. This can be used for
the purpose of gaining testimonials as well as seeking ways
to improve your product or develop additional products your
customers may need.

A strong guarantee will provide your visitor with greater
confidence to purchase your product. Try to make your
guarantee simple and without too many conditions. Always
honor your guarantee without question or delay.

5. Conclusion

Getting plenty of hits to your web site is a very positive
situation to be in. By implementing some of the hints
provided in this article, you can convert these visitors
into being your customers.

Surfing for pay this week:

AllAdvantage got a face-lift to go along with their much-
improved ViewBar software. Recent attempts to contact
the many long lost souls who joined and waited for the
software release have apparently added some surfers. Good
thing, AllAdvantage has the leadership role, and should do
whatever it takes to maintain the "first-mover" position.

The other new "monster" program, continues to stick its
foot in its mouth. GetPaid4 has finally announced it is
ready for members to see stats live online. Great. The
problem is that many members are SURE GetPaid4 has posted
stats that are wrong. I think mine are too. Maybe in a
few months GetPaid4 will announce stats are online and
correct? Meanwhile, they are about to roll out ads to
a mobile phone or pager near you. "The AdBroadcast Service
is a revolutionary way for you to benefit from using your
wireless phone or pager." You will need to be able to
accept wireless email to play. They at least did contact
their members to acknowledge the software could not be used
the last part of last month. Mine still won't work today.

ClickDough, one of my recent new favorite newcomers, is
now "rolling out" nationwide. The idea is that their
program was previously in limited, Boston-area, testing.
Hope you did not mind early notice. This is going to be
a good one in my opinion, the software-less ad-serving
technique makes for easy use, unlimited use, and almost
instant stats makes this one to work. Are you going to
watch this one go by too? Are you part of my family that
writes to say, "wish we had paid attention when you said
to join AllAdvantage"? Get out of the bus station, and go
on down to the cyber-docks, that is where your "ship" is
coming in. Use the great resources for you to select one
or all of the programs listed in my "surf/get paid" pages.

mValue moves the deadline: After first saying that it
would tell winners within five days, mValue is now saying
it could be up to 90 days to send the email notice that
your recruiting efforts won a prize of $100 to the big
$1,000,000 prize. The big winner (by the way) is rumored
to be the same person with the most AllAdvantage referrals.
His secret? A site with HEAVY, HEAVY traffic. This is
the same "secret" used by the smaller winners. A page
created to explain "surf/get paid" programs is just a
blip on the cyber radar screen. Build a better mousetrap
with content of value, and you will see your referrals
increase.

RadioFreeCash is giving out CDs while gearing up for the
real cash payment process. Takes just a minute to set it up.
I am still positive about this program's prospects.

ItAdsUp software is a bit buggy, but I am trying to work with
it. More troubling is the payout for this month. It is in
the "use later" group. Piggy, Piggy, wheres little Piggy?
Dunno. PaidForSurf is tearing down and rebuilding their plan
from the ground up. Unlimited hours at about $.40/hour is
the target (paid 60 days in arrears - like the advertisers
pay them.) OK, now if I can just get the software to NOT crash
my computer. Maybe a new download/install would help?
AllPaidFor has aligned itself with NarrowCast, a big banner
serving outfit. Members can get 10,000 free CLICKS if you
become an active member of their network. Might be worth the
effort. Clicks are MORE valuable than impressions. Don't know
what happens if you have a poor banner <g>.

Meanwhile, GoToWorld is paying out a whopping $1,000 to one
of its million of users who recruits the most members over
the next couple weeks. So what? Exactly.

Most interesting Newcomer this week: ProcessTree. You may
recall hearing something about a group of folks that were
searching for E.T. using your computer. So much empty space
to process, so little time. The SETI project uses your computer
to work through raw data to find alien life. You join for free,
and only talk to the morning talk show hosts if your computer
hits the mother load. Now, take that concept, hundreds, maybe
thousands of private computer users letting some of the "down"
time be used to process "real" work, and getting paid for it.
Now, add the opportunity to get paid when others use your
affiliate link to join this growing private processing power.
That's the idea. Don't see that you have to have a certain
level of computer to participate. Didn't see geographic
restrictions. Open to both Mac and PC users. I like it.

The 7 Sins of Marketing

During my years in marketing and sales, I have studied the pros
and cons of many-a-marketing program.

What I would like to do today is give you a check list of the 7
most common sins in marketing.

What about you? How many of the following sins in marketing
apply to you?


#1 No, I didn't test the product market before I picked my
product.

This is by far the biggest mistake I see in marketing today. One
I've made myself many times over. It's down right amazing how
many companies decide on the product they will sell before ever
checking to see if the potential customer would be interested.
The most prominent reason for this is infatuation. The seller
falls in love with his or her own product and assumes the public
will too. This infatuation clouds the marketing professional's
ability to objectively, rather than subjectively determine the
true potential of the product market. Just because you love it,
doesn't mean that they will. Test the waters, ask your customers
and clients what they think. Survey a portion of your current
clients and the general public. You owe it to yourself to see if
this product will in fact meet the needs and wants of your
customers.


#2 You neglect to explain why you can sell it cheaper.

Whenever I see a lower price, the first question that pops into
my mind is....How? How can they sell it at a lower cost than
their competitors. If they fail to answer that question in their
marketing strategy, I immediately become suspicious of the
quality of the product. If they had only explained how they
could sell it cheaper. If one of your selling points is a lower
price you better explain to me how you can do it.


#3 You didn't make it easy for me to do business with you.

How many times have you found an interesting product, but they
make it so difficult and undesirable to business with them that
you go elsewhere. Why would anybody want to make it hard to do
business with them? I have certain subconsence requirements to
do business with companies. The most important being
convenience. The way I see it, I'm the consumer and if I'm
willing to spend my hard earned cash with them, I expect them
to make it easy for me to do so. The worst is "time
consumption". If you want to lose me as a customer, go ahead
waste my time. Time is a valuable commodity to me and I don't
want to spend it waiting. I'd rather pay the extra dollar or
whatever with the competition if they can get me out the door
faster. Consumers expect their shopping experience to be an
enjoyable one. If you can make it fun and entertaining to do
business with you, chances are they'll be back.


#4 Don't be a Clone. If you do not have a unique proposition,
why would we be interested in you? I'm sure if you have been
in marketing for even the smallest amount of time, you know
what a Niche is. Find and develop your own unique selling
strategy. To have an advantage over your competitors you
better know your Niche, know who your customers are, where
your market lies and how you will exploit it.


#5 I loved your product, what else do you have to offer. Here's
a big sales loss. You didn't develop your "back-end" sales
strategy. It's extremely important before you sell your first
product to already have your follow-up product at the door and
waiting. If your customer has purchased from you once, there's
a good chance they will again. You have already established a
certain kind of trust with your customer. Don't let them down
and never rely on one primary product to carry your business.
Product development is an integral part of any business. If you
want to stay in business keep your present customers coming back
for more.


#6 Use the truth to sell your way out of trouble. Every business
will run into this problem sooner or later. No matter how good
you are, you are bound to promote a poor marketing campaign or
product. When you need a fast way to stimulate sales for a
product that is not selling, try the truth. But know how to use
the truth to your advantage. Tell your customers that you have
an overstock of the product. Tell them you selling the product
at cost or below cost. There is a viable market of bargain
hunters out there. Two common approaches are the "Reward" and
"Introduction" techniques.

The reward technique might look like this: Because you are one
of our VIP Customers, we want to offer you this special price...
or As a special Limited Time Introductory Price we......


#7 If It's Not Broken....Don't Fix It! Why do marketers feel the
need to change a marketing strategy that works. The fact is,
they become bored with seeing it, and by that token they
wrongfully assume the consumer is also tried of seeing it, even
though the sales are the same. Seems incredible, but happens
every day. They fool themselves into thinking that they can
foresee the end of a successful marketing campaign. If it's
making the sales it should leave it alone. Now that's not to say
that you shouldn't test new marketing ideas, but never drop a
winner because you are tired of seeing it or you believe it's
nearing it's end. Major corporations and small companies alike
have successfully used the same marketing campaigns for decades.
