to merge. Although X.com who ended their promotion after
reaching its targeted membership mass has a bit more shaky
reputation (you will recall I sputtered about them once or

organization is expected to go by X.com. No word yet on when
PayPal will stop its promotion. Last time I checked, I was

A Step By Step Guide

If you're doing business on the Internet then you know the
importance of ranking high in the Search Engines. The
competition is fierce, but it can be done. What I am about
to reveal to you will increase your traffic immensely, but
it must be done correctly. The goal is to create powerful
doorway pages that not only rank high in the Search Engines,
but are Search Engine friendly and provide some valuable
content for your visitors.

What is a doorway page anyway? A doorway page is a webpage
specifically designed to rank high in the Search Engines
for a specific keyword or keyword phrase. Not just a blank
page with a link that redirects to your main page, but a
powerful, content rich page packed with your keywords.

First of all, select three of the most specific keyword
phrases that best describe your website. If your website
is about dog grooming, then your keyword phrases might be:
dog grooming, pet care, pet groomers. Place these keyword
phrases, separated with a comma, in your KEYWORD meta tags
between the HEADING tags of your HTML.

(Notice: Some of the opening and closing brackets < > have
been left off some of the examples below to enable you
to view the code.)

Example:

<META name="KEYWORDS" content="dog grooming, pet care, dog
groomers">

Next, write a descriptive sentence about your website packed
with your keywords for your DESCRIPTION Meta tag.

Write a descriptive TITLE for your page that includes your
KEYWORDS.

Your doorway page should load very quickly, so keep your
graphics to a minimum. Make sure you don't include any
banners and place your main logo at the top of your page,
linked to your main page. Place your keywords within the
image tag using the ALT tag. Below your logo, include
an intriguing sentence and link it to your main page.

In addition to placing your keywords in your Meta tags
Title, and Image tag, you can also use the Comment tag.
Comment tags can be used throughout your page to organize
your content and make updating easier. They also provide
another great way to place your KEYWORDS. They won't be
visible on your webpage, just in the HTML.

The key to creating powerful, keyword rich, Search Engine
friendly doorway pages is to provide some valuable content.
In the body of your webpage, provide your visitors with
a free 250 - 300 word article or report loaded with your
keywords every couple of sentences.

using one of your keywords.

If you're creating many pages, simply add a number to the
end of your page.

When you're ready to submit your pages to the Search
Engines, submit only one page each day. If you've created
several pages you'd like to submit, you may want to

your doorway pages. That way, you can submit just your
links page and let the Search Engines crawl the rest of
your links.

Creating doorway pages is a powerful way to increase your
website traffic, but don't stop at just one. Imagine how
much traffic you'd receive with 100 keyword packed,
doorway pages all pointing to your website...

Surfing for pay this week:

AllAdvantage has been having hick ups all week it seems since
coming out of the reworking of their site that will provide
referral stats in the denomination of the surfer (rather than
just dollar info.) I have managed to get in once or twice,
but that is about it. By the way, AA is feeling a bit like
the drunk who makes the inappropriate wisecrack at the party.
Recent SPAM warnings going to the whole family warn about
SPAM/cheating as AA gets tough on those who have been abusing
the system. IF you fall into that category, better stop. If
is not too late, it will be soon. On the other hand, those
millions of us who do not participate, may feel a bit offended
by AA's comments. Just remember, they meant it well, and they
are sorry if you are offended. Still, better training in the
communication department is apparently required.

Editor's note - What is AllAdvantage doing? Reading my mind?
Just as I get this ready to send to you, here comes AA, hat
in its hand, apologizing for the "significant drop in
accessibility" over the last few days. The problems are a
result of the changes, and after working diligently, they
think they will have it fixed shortly. Good. Late, but good.

ClickDough has announced the amount to be deducted for the
administrative cost of sending out checks or electronically
zipping the money to your X.com account. The charge will be
$0.99 and $0.25. Not bad, not bad at all. This program is
still attractive with unlimited surf time and 8 levels of
referrals, although momentum has slowed since the X.com
program has stopped paying $20 for new members. Still, for
pure builders this program is attractive. No need to match
surf time of downline. Easy quick delivery of ads which can
be used by anyone who can open a window. They have moved the
date to announce current earnings to March 15th. That should
be interesting.

Not exactly in the surf/get-paid category, MailBits has
improved its reporting system. Now, you can not only see the
income stats for the suggestion script and ezine signups,
you can also track which individual pages are providing the
hits that drive that income. This is VERY useful in that you
can see what is and is not working to pull traffic, referrals,
and of course income. I continue to be very pleased with this
program. If your site needs more hits and more money. Get it.

The consensus seems to be that the Windows Media Player is the
hands-down winner for use (vs. RealAudio player). If you
guessed wrong and you have the RealPlayer installed, you can
switch by clicking on the support button on the RFC player.
A FAQ will come up. Somewhere around the 3rd or 4th question
you will see a drop down bar that will let you change your
player of preference. I have been experimenting with the RFC
service, and the more I do, the more I REALLY like this one.
It is still early, so you should climb on board and start
building your own RFC family before the live kick off on, well,
April Fools Day (4/1/00). .... Maybe a different start date
would be a good idea? <g> It won't bother me, I hope not you
either.

ePIPO, which has been "temporarily" out of service for more than
a temporary period shows signs of life. You can check stats on
referrals by following the link provided on the system status
page. When I checked mine, I found more referrals. No info
was provided regarding the current money balance, but rumor
has them restoring the site shortly. This after a major
effort to create an architecture in their system that will
meet the demands of heavy use. There is no word on whether
the pay rate will fall from its intended target. IF it delivers
at about what it promised, this one still could be worthwhile.

Elsewhere, mValue seems to have forgotten how to roll over to
the next accounting period. Maybe they should have followed
the conventions used by others, like having a month end on
something we recognize, like the end of a month. As it is
they have divided the months around the 23rd, 24th day. Now
however, we seem to be globbing the hours and earnings from
one month into the next. Maybe they are concentrating on
giving out the prize money promised to those of us who built
their membership. Hope so. At least I can easily tell when
I am earning dollars vs. points.

Meanwhile, ItAddsUps is coming in at LESS than the promised
50 cents/hour. Looks more like 20 cents, which puts it in the
lightweight PayBar category. Probably not enough to fire either
software up very often.

Still elsewhere, ValuePay, who I had such high hopes for once
upon a time, still languishes. More people seem to be able to
download the software. Few seem to be able to make it work, and
no one seems to know if anyone is being paid even if you can get
the software, the elusive Piggy, going. Maybe time to consider
taking this little piggy to market and putting everyone out of
their misery.

GTW, the snake, slithered out of its hiding place recently to
promise cash money to those of you who want to help them steal
from advertisers. Seems they are now paying a bounty for
clicks. Yep, a little click for cash contest. The number of
clicks required will make anything but cheaters with click
cheating programs a waste of time. GTW has already eaten its
membership. Now it seeks to bit the hand that feeds it. Worms.
The sooner gone the better.

Confirmed as closed this week is AdPerks, which used a pay to
visit plan. They claim they will pay folks with over $10 in
monies owed. I am guessing they won't get out their checkbook
to often. I doubt many hit that level. They were never on
anything but a "considered" list on my BIG LIST of surf
programs.

New to me this week:
SurfingPrizes - brand new program, started on Tuesday morning.
I think I will like this one. Pays for 1 direct and 5 more
levels. Software is downloadable immediately. Something I like
is the fact that you can see (from the stats page) what each
level of referrals are worth. This is good for builders, who
want to get behind this early (now) and create a big group.
This is a pure surf/get paid program. The software creates a
an ad area that is just a tad bigger than the 468X60 banners
being served, and seems able to rise above whatever window
you are working with. For example as I type this, the software
is running, and the banner has popped up over the TextPad work
area.

Also new this week:
CashRadio - I predicted when RadioFreeCash was introduced that
it would not take long (under 30 days) to find a competitor.
The idea is just so appealing. Offer money to Internet users
to sell their ears to advertisers. Share a portion of the ad
revenue with users, following the example of AllAdvantage with
banner ads. CashRadio will pay for up to 80 hours/monthly at
rate of 25 cents/hour. That is $20 folks. Of course, they are
also paying when you recruit others. Basically (assuming that
all users max their hours - NEVER a good idea, believe me) each
direct referral is worth $4/month and indirects are worth $2.
If you are on the net, you might as well get paid to listen to
one of 175 choices of music. I know I will.

HOW TO CREATE A CAPTIVATING HEADLINE

You're reading this article because the headline captured
your attention. It sparked your desire to know more about
creating headlines. That's the mission of an effective
headline. It captures the reader's attention and provides a
compelling reason to read whatever follows.

The headline is the most important part of any ad or sales
letter. It determines whether or not people will read your
message. You may have the best written copy in the world but
you've wasted your time if your headline doesn't excite
readers enough to read your message.

Here are some examples of effective headlines I found in the
classified ad section of a popular website:

* Lose 15 Pounds In 30 Days... And Keep It Off
* Submit Your Ad To 200 Websites With 1 Mouse Click
* Instantly Increase Your Orders By 29%
* How To Make $2,000/Month At Home With Your Computer
* Discover How To Reduce Your Fuel Bills By 43%

Each of these headlines clearly states the benefit I can
expect to get from the product, service or business
opportunity promoted in the ad under the headline. If I am
interested in gaining the benefit, I cannot resist reading
the entire ad to find out more.

A SIMPLE FIVE STEP PROCEDURE

I've used the following 5 step procedure many times to
create powerful headlines. It's simple and easy to follow.
Even someone without special talent, skill or previous
experience can use it to create a captivating headline.

STEP #1. Define in writing the ideal prospect you want to
capture with your headline. Be sure to include the
characteristics that make your product or service valuable
to this prospect.

STEP #2. Personalize this ideal prospect by visualizing them
as one person you want to attract with your headline. Keep
this vision of one person in your mind whenever you're
writing a headline. Your ad or sales letter will be read by
one person at a time. Therefore, you'll find it easier to
produce an effective headline by visualizing just one person
and writing to that person.

STEP #3. Determine the most valuable benefit this person
will gain from the product, service or business opportunity
promoted in the message under your headline.

STEP #4. Write as many one sentence statements as you can
about this benefit. Use one or more of the words from the
following list in each statement. There are many other power
words you can use in your headlines. However, many years of
trial and error have taught me these 12 are the most
effective:

You, Free, New, Guaranteed, Fast, Easy, Discover, Proven,
How-to, Save, Increase, $7953 (any exact amount of money)

STEP #5. Select the most powerful statement on your list. If
you have several that seem equally powerful, try combining
them into one statement and use that as your headline.

That's it! You've just created a powerful headline to
capture your reader's attention and provide a compelling
reason to read whatever follows your headline.

using this 5 step procedure.

Use this simple 5 step procedure the next time you want to
create a captivating headline. It's easy to follow and
you'll create a powerful headline to attract your reader's
attention and compel him/her to read your ad or sales

Q. You don't seem to get too excited about spam. How do you
deal with it?

A. That depends. I know that spam is a very real problem -
especially for those who must pay for their online time in
increments.

My ISP provides a way for clients to view the subject and return
address of email before downloading it. Anything that is
unwanted can then be deleted right on the server. If web
hosting companies would get on the ball and provide this
service, it could practically eliminate any value that spam has
to the sender.

Barring that (because I receive most email through my web host's
servers) I simply let it come in and eliminate it before reading
anything. It's easy enough to spot.

Two situations will cause me to report a spammer. If (s)he has
obviously harvested the email address from one of my web sites -
or if (s)he has subscribed to my ezine, then proceeds to shower
me with ads.

Harvesting is unmistakable. It's never personalized and it may
very well be sent to every email address posted on the web site
so I receive several copies. Or - my email address isn't
showing at all except in a full header.

Since I make it a point to send a personal "Welcome" in addition
to the autoresponse for new subscribers, I also recognize when
someone subscribes to my ezine for the purpose of sending spam.
I particularly watch the free email service addresses. I use a
template for this so it doesn't eat up a lot of time, keeps me
somewhat familiar with my subscribers and opens up lines of
communication.

How do I report spam? Templates, again. I never bother to
respond with the "Remove" instructions. Here's the process:

1) Be sure it IS spam - and that you didn't invite this email in
some way.

2) Open the full header on the offending email.

3) Forward the entire email - addressing it to "abuse@_______.
Fill in the name of the ISP or free email service the email
came from originally.

4) In your message area, copy and paste from your template a
short note stating that this email is spam and you trust it
will be dealt with accordingly. One line is all it takes.
Send it off and know it WILL be dealt with by the appropriate
agency!

5) If the spam came through a domain name, go to the whois data
base at: http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois/
Keep this address in your bookmarks.

6) Note the web hosting company for the domain name. Send the
forwarded email to abuse@ the web hosting company.

I don't go nuts over spam simply because I decided long ago to
use my energy for more productive things than trying to kill
elephants with fly swatters. Little energy is expended through
my "Delete" button. However, this reporting process takes only
a few seconds and it gives me the satisfaction of knowing that
I've taken out a few of them.
