Does Your Site Have Stopping Power?

About one in every ten sites I visit succeeds at keeping me
around longer than a minute. I'm usually in a hurry when I
surf the web, and I'm not alone.

Actually, the term "Web surfer" is a misleading one. Not too
many people I know actually "surf" the web at a leisurely
pace. Instead, most times they are on the web they click and
click in a frenzied search for something in particular.
Perhaps a better term than web surfer would be "Speed
Clicker."

Once you come to accept that fact you'll see why it is
crucial to give your visitors a reason to slow down as soon
as they arrive at your site. Too many webmasters don't do
this right away and risk losing another web surfer and
potential customer.

Slowing your visitors down a little is the first step in
getting them to actually stop and stay a while. If you can
accomplish that you'll be on your way to generating a new
subscriber or customer. And ain't that what it's all about?

OK, so now that you know that your number one task is to
slow down these speed clickers, I'd like to share with you
exactly how to do it...

Once you're sure your website loads quickly and looks
professional, it's time to post your "slow down" sign right
at your main page. No, I'm not talking about one of those
tired old "under construction" signs. Instead, I'm talking
about smacking your visitors right square in the eye, with a
compelling reason to calm their pace a bit and investigate
your site further.

No, it is not done with fancy graphics or technology like
audio or video. It is best done with the number one tool at
your disposal -- words.

But before you start thinking up some catchy headlines or
attention grabbers, I'd like you to throw those tired old
axioms away. Instead, take a moment today and consider why
these "Speed Clickers" have happened upon your site in the
first place.

What are they looking for? As a webmaster it is your
responsibility to know what your best prospect is thinking
and searching for. If you plan to have a successful web
business, most of these speed clickers should be hoping to
find the very things you've built your business on. Do you
know what they are? Here's a little help. Ask yourself these
questions...

What is the main benefit(s) your prospects and customers get
from doing business with you rather than the competition?

Are your prices the cheapest?
Is your selection the largest?
Do you offer a unique technology?
Do you cater to a special niche market?
Do you offer free assistance others can't?

If you can't think of at least one main benefit you'd better
work on building one into your business. Not only is it
crucial to your success, it's the only way to slow down
those speed surfers -- by simply telling them THEIR benefit
as soon as they arrive.

So were you able to come up with at least one solid benefit?
Good for you. Now put it into action. First put the main
benefit or benefits of doing business with you into a
sentence.

Need an example? Here's my sentence...

Visitors to bizweb2000 receive high quality online marketing
assistance (with no fluff!) from a guy who has been making
his living from the Internet since 1996.

As you can see from that sentence, the best benefits I can
offer to my website visitors are:

- quality, no-nonsense help
- my experience as a full-time web marketer

You'll see this message prominently displayed at my home
page. No, not in those exact words, but through a more
powerful method of delivery -- from the mouths of my
customers. This is my slow down sign -- and it works.

I invite you, scratch that, I CHALLENGE you to come up with
your own "slow down sign" at your website. Spend a day if
necessary. If you have trouble coming up with anything,
contact some of your best customers and ask them why they do
business with you. You may find that their feedback provides
all the stopping power your home page needs!

Surfing for pay this week:

News this week seems to be more negative than positive.

AllAdvantage is falling behind on sending out checks. As
the organization grows, so does the problem of getting out
checks. They are targeting the next payment for the end
of the month. This will put them one month behind on
payments to members. The current check due is for February.
That is not a good trend, and I hope they can return to a
check release schedule that is closer to the 15 days after
the previous month. We will see. Others are seeing their
first DECREASE in earnings. I feel fortunate. I expect to
be above February's earnings by the end of the day with a
few days left. But the day this important mark has been
reached in recent months has been moving back too. There
is still lots of opportunity and I am not predicting AA's
demise any time soon. In fact the IPO is still being
processed and that should add millions of new dollars when
the shares are offered at about $10/share =/-. We will see.
Expect outages at the end of the month while stats are
being compiled. They predict 3 hours of downtime, but don't
be surprised if it is a bit more.

Update on the group ad campaign. You may recall I shipped
off $100 bucks for $50 in advertising for me and my girlfriend
to promote the AA program. I have really only been watching
her numbers, because frankly my increases come from more than
that group effort. Results so far? She started with 3 directs
and 0 indirects. Neither direct was doing much with the bar
so she was getting the minimum paid every two months. Now?
9 directs and 3 indirects. Was this worth it? Jury is still
out, but I opted out of round two advertising.

Ignifuge explains. Seems their site was the victim of
spamming members. Stats are back up and seem to be tacking
but no word on the first round of checks. That is still
a problem.

Vituads site has put its site down for about a "month" to
redo it. Scrambling to make their proposition work I guess
but not a good sign.

mValue is competing for your referrals! Have you used the
"tell a friend" feature at "your" home page on mValue's
site to invite your friends to join? If you have, you lost
out. Seems the message is not very good at getting YOUR
URL to your friends. That means that visitors are added to
mValue's family, but not yours. STOP using this method
immediately if you are at all. Hey, mValue, are you really
that dense? Your membership cannot recommend a program
that is actively pulling this kind of stuff, and we are
more effective at getting referrals than your sneaky methods
are ever going to be. AA did not gain 6 million members
with these kinds of tactics. Do you want to be an "also ran"
or a recommended program. Repent and repair your ways. Now.

On the other hand, this mornings email brings an announcement
from mValue that will put a smile on the most aggressive
"builders" of the mValue family. According to their email,
mValue will now waive the requirement to surf 40 yourself before
you are paid for your downline surfing starting May 1, 2000.
This ONLY applies to you folks who have a downline of 250 or
more members. This will allow those who specialize in finding
new members to do just that. Recruit. They have already
increased surfing hour limits to 40 hours for the month of
April. Now with this alteration, they are going to add a
nice incentive to build an organization of over 250 before
May 1st. There is no doubt in my mind that I will max out
AA's limit and mValue's limit before the end of the month,
but for those of you who do not, this makes mValue more
attractive. Just get your referrals before they do <g>.

Keep your clicks up. The check I received from Advertising.com
aka GetPaid4 this month was about 1/2 of the potential. Why?
Two reasons: 1. They suffered TERRIBLE outages in January,
which is the period covered by this check. 2. My personal
click percentage .34% was below the .5% required for full
credit. Be sure you reach the correct level before the end
of the month. Looks like that is about 40 clicks over a 75
hour period of time. By the way, if you pop over to your own
member site you will find a link for a "free phone card"
which I passed on because it is a come on for an opt in list.
You would think two pop-up banners for every page viewed
would be enough. While we are at it, looks like the referral
link for GetPaid4 needs to be changed too. For some reason
that escapes my understanding (except, perhaps to get your
referrals?) you should now DROP the WWW from your link to
get it to work properly. Your link should now look like
mine: http://getpaid4.com/?stpromo
Whether anyone will run through the grilling required to
become a member (did I see an offer for a kitchen sink?)
is another matter and anyone's guess. Going to wait a bit
too see what kind of money comes in on this one before I
join the "GetSnakeOil" crowd, but I think this program needs
a good cleaning. It does feel a bit slimy right now.
Late word is that this URL change may NOT be needed. The
problem is fixed, but I am leaving this in to let you know
you may want to be on guard for this problem. On all these
programs you should check your links once in a while to be
sure it goes where you think it does.

Elsewhere, GoToWorld has crawled out from under its rock to
announce to whoever is silly enough to be working with them
that new software is available. Too bad. These guys had
the early "Big Mo" but squandered their lead by lying to you
and I. Once the veneer rubs off, a stinker is still a stinker
even with better software.

Searching for something positive this week, I want to remind
those of you who are members of SurfPrizes that the paying
period begins on the 31st. There is some debate about if you
will need to download an updated software package to start
earning, but I expect a banner on their fine little bar would
be displayed to let you know.

New to me this week:
There are several newbies that I found this week that I like.

Maybe it is because I will be in the "city that never sleeps"
in a few days, but I like the idea of combining two activities
that I enjoy into one. Surfing for cash and gambling - not
for real - you CANNOT lose any money.. wish that were true
in Vegas.

FreeJackPot has created an online slot machine. Each spin
lets you have a chance to win prizes from known companies, and
there will be an ongoing progressive jackpot once the program
rolls out of beta. Your spins are "free" in that you are
"paid" 1 spin every minute you surf with their software open.
I tested the program during its beta testing period, during
which time I won $5.00 twice. I also won $5.00 because someone
I told about the program won $5.00. If you refer someone and
they win, you win. The slot machine portion of the software
worked fine. If you are a slot fan, you will enjoy playing it.
The "earn free spins" portion of the program also worked well
for me, although I did hear of one or two small problems for
others. When you join, you are given 50 spins to start. My
advice is to join up, but save your spins for them to come out
of beta and offer live prizes. If you want to try a few test
spins, you can of course, but you will see them explaining
that the prizes offered now are just "test" prizes and will
not be awarded. I really think this offers a win for everyone.
You get to gamble without cost and could win (OK it is not
likely you win BIG, but if you never won the little prizes
you would stop using the software.) Advertisers get their
message to you and me. The longer I looked at some of the
ads being shown, the more likely I was to click over, and
that is all a merchant can ask for online. I think JackPot
will charge enough to make the venture worth while for them.
After all, like any gambling program, they create the rules.

I am going to recommend you look at ReadClick, a paid email
program. This is a new entrant in the "opt-in" email list
category. They send you an email, you follow the link and
you get paid. Tell others about this, have them do the
same, you get paid more. I like that idea.

I also added YoYoMail this week. This too is a paid email
plan. They are giving you your own email account and paying
when you read your email.

I was going to recommend you look at a program called Zwallet,
but I am not sure anyone is getting referral credits, so I am
afraid this may be a scam. Stay away for the moment.

Also new this week, but looking weak to me, Aaruka.com. They
are promising to pay a top payrate of $0.50/hour for your
surf time, BUT the terms allow for a change in payrate at
any time, and this does not look like a well financed program.
This is more likely to fall into the PayBar category than
say AllAdvantage or mValue. No software is ready yet. I am
going to pass at the moment.

HOW TO USE AFFILIATE MARKETING TO ENSURE YOUR
SUCCESS

I've been thinking about how affiliate
marketing has been shaping online business
recently and it occurred to me that with
so many new businesses coming on the
Internet everyday that now might be a good
time to provide an affiliate marketing
overview while going easy on detailed
initiatives.

Lets start with the simple formula for
business success and then apply it to how we
can use affiliate marketing to increase your
business revenue.

THE 3 STEP FORMULA FOR SUCCESS

It doesn't matter what business you are in;
business success will always revolve around
a simple 3-step formula. Merchants need to
acquire so many nonqualified prospects
(step1) to turn them into qualified prospects
(step2) to make so many new sales (step 3).

Once the merchant achieves step 3 (the sale),
the merchant starts the cycle all over again.
Selling has been and always will be a
numbers game. Accordingly, there are always
two determinants of sales success. The first
key is to reduce the time it takes to get from
step 1(unqualified prospects) to step 3 (a
sale). The second key to success is to
multiply the amount of times the merchant
completes this cycle. Affiliate Marketing
expedites this process.

In its basic form, Affiliate Marketing is a
form of "Revenue Sharing" that occurs when
a web site agrees to sell/advertise or promote
another businesses products or services in
exchange for a commission. The parties
involved are typically called "Merchants" and
"Affiliates". Merchant sites are those sites
that pay other web sites for sending referrals
or sales. Affiliate sites are those sites that
earn commissions by referring customers to
the merchant sites. A single web site can act
as both a merchant and an affiliate. In fact,
as Business 2 Business E-commerce
continues to grow the definition of what a
merchant and affiliate is will blur.

Affiliate programs are an invaluable part of
the marketing success for online merchants
and are reshaping how business is done over
the Internet. With online sales expected to
dominate overall retail sales from this point
in time on it's critical that all companies and
webmasters learn how to maximize its
potential, efficiency and effectiveness.

To understand the importance of affiliate
programs for online merchants, it is crucial to
review how merchants have advertised in the
past. Previously, a merchant paid outrageous
prices for advertising with no guarantees of
performance. They HOPED for sales and
paid on advertising effort, not results. With
Affiliate programs, the merchant only pays
for an ad if and when a sale is made. This is
a marketers haven and properly used this type
of performance-based advertising is
extremely profitable for all involved.

There is one Universal Truth in business:
everything you do brings you closer to or
further away from a sale. Either an action
performed by your business helps expedite
present and future business or it suggests to a
prospect or customer that they should be
doing business elsewhere.

moves the merchant closer to a sale by
removing step 1 (the time draining practice of
attracting nonqualified prospects) from the

when using one of the affiliate solution
providers who recruit affiliates for you.)

Merchants can easily accomplish this
without incurring the advertising, recruiting,
managing, tracking, payment and overhead
costs typically associated with adding new
salespeople. Best of all, merchants can do it
all from any computer that has Internet
access in the world, with a simple web
interface, in just seconds. This will bring the
merchants more sales and in less time than
they ever dreamed possible.

Answers for the "Pro in Motion"

Q. I'm just getting started online. Do I always have to give a
money-back guarantee? (Steve Q.)

A. Professionalism demands that refunds be offered to all
customers. Not just offered, but guaranteed. That goes without
saying - but maybe folks aren't quite so sure about exactly
what needs to be guaranteed.

Simple answer. Everything! The only exception is for

guarantee. Your call.

I will warn you, however, that companies demonstrating the
highest degree of professionalism will make things right for the
customer no matter how long a period of time has past. "The
customer is always right," may not be true in every situation.
But, true professionalism demands that it be accepted as a fact
whether it is correct or not.


Q. I need online services like everyone else but I'm overwhelmed
trying to choose the right ISPs, web hosts, etc. Is there a
secret to getting good service? (Tina L.)

A. Let's begin with the obvious. Do you have COMPLETE contact
information for the company you are considering doing business
with?

Have you read their "Terms and Conditions?" Are those terms
reasonable, or were they only created to protect the company
itself? What kind of protection do YOU have? Can they shut
down your service without any warning to you - or are they
claiming that they can?

How do they respond to you? Before you buy - or hire a service
- call that company and talk with someone. Ask questions. Ask
the hard ones! If they become impatient with you - move on to
the next company on your list.

You do need a list because you need to interview people!
Remember - they aren't doing you any favor by selling you a
service or product. Yes - you do need the service/product, but
you are doing them the favor by becoming their customer.
Remember who is paying!
