*I LOVE YOU or so thought countless of folks this last week
when they got attachments from friends. Opening it resulted
in destruction of JPEG and MP3 files. Then this worm went
ahead and sent out the same message to EVERYONE in the
infected persons Outlook email program. So it spread quickly.
There are now fixes for the computer worms. The human worm
who created this one will hopefully get fixed later...

*While I'm thinking about annoying online problems, I found this
tidbit for you this week if you think your site is being used
as a springboard for SPAM. Instead of putting your email
address as mailto:webmaster@yourdomain.com use this instead:

I am told that gives the SPAMMERS a bad address but real
people using email programs will have that "error" corrected.

*Did I really do that last week? Did I really forget to
mention the latest cool tool that comes with the suite

HOW TO OVERCOME THE 4 REASONS
PEOPLE DON'T BUY FROM YOU

Sales are produced by people. It doesn't matter if you're
selling lemonade to tourists or airplanes to governments.
Even on the Internet, every sale is the result of a live
person or group of people deciding to buy from you.
Unfortunately, many decide NOT to buy from you.

Would you like to increase the number of sales you get? It's
easier than you think. There are only 4 reasons why people
decide not to buy from you. Once you understand the
psychology behind each of them you can implement proven
strategies to neutralize their impact and get a higher
percentage of sales.

REASON #1: NO NEED

People in our modern society rarely buy something because
they need it. They buy something because they want it. When
prospective customers say, "I don't need your product" they
really mean, "I don't want it". How can you can avoid losing
these sales? Target your marketing. Promote your business
only among people likely to have a strong desire for the
benefits provided by your product or service.

EXAMPLE: A network marketer will lose money by advertising a
business opportunity in the local newspaper. Most readers
aren't interested in a business opportunity. Instead, she
can generate a lot of business by advertising in trade
magazines, newsletters or ezines read by opportunity
seekers.

REASON #2: NO MONEY

Consumers and businesses rarely avoid buying something
because they don't have (or can't get) the money needed to
make the purchase. They avoid buying what you offer because
they place a higher priority on spending money for something
else.

You can get these sales by making YOUR product or service
their priority. What is the most pressing problem you can
solve for prospects in your targeted market? Dramatize how
they'll feel when your product or service eliminates that
problem. Make it so important they'll move your offer to the
top of their priority list.

TIP: You can demonstrate a low cost for your product or
service by breaking down the price to its lowest time
increment. For example, "Enjoy all of this for less than 90
cent a day" (for something priced at $325 a year).

REASON #3: NO HURRY

Many people tend to procrastinate after they decide to buy
something. As time passes some will forget why your product
or service is so important. They'll be distracted by other
priorities and forget all about you. You'll lose the
business.

You can avoid losing sales because of "no hurry" by
rewarding customers for taking immediate action and
penalizing those who don't. For example, offer a special
discount price or a special bonus for ordering before a
deadline.

REASON #4: NO TRUST

Most people fear losing something they have more than they
desire gaining something they want. This fear causes many
people to avoid buying something they really want. They're
reluctant to buy because they might not get what they expect
from your product or service and they'll lose their money.
You have to remove this perceived risk to avoid losing
business because of "no trust". Here are 3 way I've found
effective for any business...

1. Eliminate the risk with an unconditional money back
guarantee.

2. Provide reassurance with testimonials from satisfied
customers.

3. Increase your credibility by allowing customers to
communicate directly with you. For example, give them your
direct phone number. You'll only get calls from serious
prospects who want the reassurance of dealing with a real
person.

There are only 4 reasons why people decide not to buy from
you. You can increase your sales and profits by
understanding the thinking behind each reason and
implementing proven strategies to neutralize their impact.

Useful Sites:

Think your site is pretty cool? Think that others will
consider it worth a bookmark? IF you are right, you
should start adding a bit of code to your site that will
allow visitors to bookmark your page(s) AND pay you cash
if the bookmarking-person is brand new to the system.
I tossed in up on several pages this past week, and I
already have a few bucks in my affiliate account. Looks
like it will produce about a dollar per day, so I should
reach the $30 minimum needed to qualify for a quarterly
check. This is a 2-tier program, so please use my link
to check this out. Bookmark traffic is probably the most
valuable kind you can get, and now with this tool, you
can get paid to encourage people to put your site in
their bookmark list.

Thanks to a reader, I am now blazing through the net with
a small program that is supposed to make my computer surf
faster, up to 100% faster. To be honest, I am not sure it
is working, but if you are bogged down by a slow modem or
connection speed, I think it is worth a try. I know it
caused no harm to my system, far as I can tell.

to track sales from the Two Dollar Ads program. This gives
me a headache-free way to accept payments AND provide

Surfing for pay this week:

*The leaders of the pack, AllAdvantage and mValue BOTH
are taking it on the chin at the moment for really buggy
software. They deserve to be bopped around a bit. There
are tales of folks running Windows 95 having one H*** of
time after the downgrades, er, upgrades just released.
I can't get my mValue to stay open. This month looks
bleary for both.

*Biggest SCUMBAGS this week? The folks inflicting the
public with their software over at Cash-Net. The site
looks harmless enough, BUT DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE.
IT WILL HURT/FREEZE UP/RUIN YOUR COMPUTER. You have been
warned.

*Elsewhere, rumors are being heard that the first AD was
served up by CashFreeRadio this past week. That is good.
They will need lots of ads to pay the rates they are
promising. This is more true since they will be paying
twice their stated rate for the first month IF you are
a registered member by then.

*Long dormant BePaid, who is promising $20-160 per hour
earnings when they rollout their AdVision software has
been in contact with members this week to say that
we can expect download instructions by mid-May. The
paid program is due to begin June 1. Now folks, you and
I know that these companies don't use a real calendar,
and I would consider those dates to be soft, BUT if it
really will deliver $20 or more per hour this is going
to be one HOT program. They could be whistling in the
dark without having sold one ad, OR they could be ready
to EXPLODE onto the scene. What if they only succeed
to hit 1/10 of their projected hourly rate. Do you know
anyone who would be happy picking up $2/hour? I do. He
is looking into the computer monitor right now...me.
Like everything else in this emerging industry, you must
be ready to roll with the punches. But UNLESS, you have
had PERFECT predictions on what will and won't be a
success, do you really want to chance being left out when
the thousands of new daily users start to join? If you
have been waiting, consider this a gentle shove.

*PaysU is almost ready to release the final version of the
PayStation. I did NOT beta test this software, but I hear
NOTHING but good things about its stability and user-
friendliness. I am looking forward to getting to play with
this program. Here is the release schedule according to
their newsletter:

*Speaking of long-lost and considered dead...ValuePay
wants you to know that IF you have all the updates for
Windows 98 SE then little Piggy should work. Still not
clear if they refuse to work with a firewall, which I
never work online without these days. I will have to
check on that. (I would still recommend you use a firewall
too if you are online much. You would be surprised who
is peeking at your computer. For me, my free copy of
InfoZone is alerting me to attacks and probes by persons/
computers unknown.) The news seems to be mixed. I have
heard of folks who have NO updates to the Windows 98SE
AND InfoZone as a firewall who claim to be able to use
the Piggy without problems. I do know that I can now
check my "payable" stats which show some surfing, but
not much. As word gets out that Piggy is back, this
program could rise to a prominent position again. That
remains to be seen. If you are one of the early adopters

Had some time to buzz around this week, lot at all the programs
that are new to me:

*My favorite new program this week has been running like a
champ since installing the software. I get real time stats,
$0.50 per hour and a $5 gift just for giving it a try. The
only knock on this program is a 15 hour limit at this time,
BUT I think this one will do well and be able to attract
advertisers so hours can increase. I also had a bit of a
struggle to get signed up, but it is worth it. For me, this
one is the pick of the litter. They have been endorsed by
Yahoo as a great utility, because it offers Gator-like features
that let it fill in the blanks of forms, hold (securely) credit
card info and more. There are six levels of referrals. There
is no Mac version of this immediately downloadable program.
I do not know about internationals either, although I may have
missed the information within the 6-7 FAQ pages that do an
excellent job of answering the basic questions you might have.
This is one I think you will actually use and enjoy. Try it.

*From "across the pond" comes Get Pounds. These guys will
be paying in pounds. That amount will be translated into
your currency before being paid for using their software. The
rates will be set at 1 pound/hour (in theory), more of
course with referrals. No need to surf. You can be paid
while you are online with the software open. With recent
moves to free thousands of surfers from awful phone rates
when accessing the net in the UK coupled with a booming
net economy over there, this one is worth a look. It is
NOT clear when the software (AdTicker) will be available
to download. I think it will be first come, first served,
BUT when I tried to peek at the site after getting my
"welcome" email - several days after joining - I could NOT
get the site to open for me. This is brand new, opening
for the public on May 8, 2000. Mac users need not look..
yet. Could not find a link for you. It appears that they
will accept internationals, certainly the US. Something I
like is that they have a "Wayfarer" program that pays you
and I a 20% premium if you indicate you are already in any
other "surf/get paid" program. You will indicate that when
you complete a bit of a targeting survey following signup.

*Also new: A program that looks like it will be BePaid
knockoff. Guess they were not the only ones working on
software that would deliver ads via software for pay.
Looking around their site, I expect that we will be seeing
some Flash ads from them, and that there will be some kind
of presentation, followed by a short question/answer to
validate you really watched the ad. The pay will range up
to $10/ad. There is no active surfing required, and you can
decide to accept or not ads being offered, like BePaid.
There is also an opt-in paid email portion to this program.
There is a survey to complete to make your advertising more
targeted and worth more. They are beta-testing the software
with the first 5000 members only for May with member-wide
release targeted for June. Mac users are out of luck, and it
appears internationals will be welcome soon.

*Also new to me, an old program that is getting ready to release
software. It may be time to take a look at this one now. This
program has had problems keeping up with members and other
problems, but they seem to be on track now. The promise is that
pay will be about $1.50/hour although while in beta the rate
will be more like $0.75/hour. Not bad. Seven levels deep. 50
hours maximum surf hours per month. No Mac version. There is
get paid to get email component. Couldn't find information
on internationals. Worth a look for the projected rate.

*Also new, a program with a little floating banner with an
incentive for clicking on banners. You will be paid in points
that convert to cash at the end of the month. Your share will
depend on your percentage of points compared to the whole
organization. There are 4 levels of referrals. No Mac version.

maximum 30 hours per month. Software is not ready. They say
they are in pre-launch stage right now. Special treatment
is planned for builders (more than 20 referrals). For my
international readers, they say you can join, but they are
NOT international at the moment (US only.) They ARE getting
both a Mac and PC version of the software ready for launch.
WebTV folks are still out of luck - unless many of you tell
them to get something for you. (I keep waiting for someone
to see that there are 100,000s of WebTV folks waiting to
join this movement and develop something for them alone...

*Also new, from an established name, comes a veiwbar too. These
guys are an already known quantity looking to horn in on all
this surf/get paid action. While the software is NOT ready,
One BIG problem is the fact that the referral URL looks like
a paragraph all by itself. [BUT THEN, if you go back to editor
comments, you already know EXACTLY how to get around this,
right? Put a Roibot account to work for you, and it becomes as
manageable as the link below this paragraph -- not a paragraph
as a link.] These guys are Canada and US ONLY at the moment,
with eyes on global expansion. Another problem is the rates
here are LOW. You are paid $0.15 and it gets worse from there.
If your plate is full of viewbar choices, I would probably
pass on this one for the moment. If you are part of their
family already, this is a natural add-on. Not sure on whether
internationals or Mac users are invited. I think..yes and no
in that order.

almost any product's sales and literally crushing the

company, they care about the benefits they'll get from
dealing with you.

Let me share with you how Hopkins used this advertising secret
to rocket a so-so beer brand from 5th place into a tie for 1st
place in just a matter of months. Listen to this:

Schlitz Beer hired Hopkins to increase their falling market
share. Every beer manufacturer at this time was screaming
"PURE" in their ads. In fact, companies were spending a
fortune just advertising this 4 letter word as big and as
bold as they could. They even took out double pages ads to
put that word in even bigger letters. All this shouting and
no explaining was making zero impressions on the buying
public. Nobody ever explained what 'pure' really meant
until Hopkins came in.

The first thing Hopkins did was take a factory tour. On this
tour he was shown plate-glass rooms where beer was dripping
over pipes. Inquiring the reason for this, Hopkins was told
that those rooms were filled with filtered air, so the beer
could be cooled without any impurities.

Next, he was shown huge expensive filters filled with white-
wood pulp that provided a superior filtering process. The
manufacturer then went on to explain how they cleaned every
pump and pipe, twice daily to assure purity. And also how
each bottle was sterilized not once or twice, but four times
before being filled with beer.

Then, Hopkins was shown the 4,000 foot deep artesian wells
dug to provide the cleanest and purest water available, even
though the factory was right on the shore of Lake Michigan.
(At this time Lake Michigan was not polluted and could provide
clean water.)

Finally, Hopkins was lead into a laboratory and was shown the
mother yeast cell, that was a product of 1,200 experiments to
bring out the robust flavor. And he was told all the yeast
used in making Schlitz beer was developed from that original
yeast cell.

After his tour Hopkins exclaimed, "Why don't you tell people
these things?"

The manufacturer's response was because every beer
manufacturer does it the same way.

And to that Hopkins replied, "But, others have never told
this story..." And he went off to create an advertising
campaign explaining to people what makes Schlitz beer pure.
Once again he told the same story any brewer could have but
he gave a meaning to purity. And this is what took Schlitz
from 5th place to a tie for 1st place in market share.

Really, this whole process is just educating.

Educating prospects about the how's, the why's, the good,
the bad and the ugly. You simply cannot over educate people.

Now maybe you're thinking anything from the 1920's can't
possibly work today -- WRONG!

Murray Raphel, a retail direct marketing consultant, tells
the story of how he was visiting one of his clients, Ethan
Allen Furniture, and he noticed carpenters in the back room
repairing furniture. He asked, "Do you make furniture here?"

The reply from the manager of this store was, "No, those
are carpenters doing work on Ethan Allen wood furniture."
He went on to explain how every customer is given a lifetime
guarantee on all their wood pieces. And he quickly added,
"But all Ethan Allen stores do this."

But of course no other store advertises this fact.

Soon Raphel ran an ad stating *Every Piece of Ethan Allen
Wooden Furniture is Guaranteed For Your Lifetime!*

And wouldn't you know it, a competitor soon ran the same
guarantee in their ad. But guess who got the credit for
the guarantee?

That's right -- the original store.

So here's the bottom line: Take the time right now to write
down exactly what you do in your business (even if it's the
exact same as any other competitor). Write down absolutely
everything and tell people everything. Don't suffer from the
curse of assumption - let people know and they'll knock down
your door to order!

Q. It's important to me to conduct myself as a professional in
my home-based online business. Can you give me some tips?
(Sam)

A. Great question! Wouldn't it be wonderful if this were the
first thing all online business owners considered?

It's difficult for me to even comprehend how anyone can believe
that an online business is excused from showing anything other
than the very highest degree of professionalism. If anything,
it's even more important to display a high degree of
professional behavior on the Internet. Your customers don't
have the benefit of personal contact with you.

If in doubt as to how you might reach these heights with your
online business, put it to the test. Ask yourself exactly how
you would run your company if you had an office downtown!
Consider how you would expect the same type of business to be
run if it were set up in the outside world, rather than in your
spare bedroom.

Signs of True Professionalism

1) A professional isn't afraid to make mistakes. Nor, does a
professional hesitate to admit those mistakes and maintain
accountability. If something isn't right, professionalism
demands that it be corrected without placing blame on other
sources - and in a timely manner. A "timely manner" is often
dictated by the customer's needs!

2) Professionals know when - and what - to give away. Then,
they do it! And, they do it in such a way that the receiver
knows they've been given a gift. A coupon to be used only for
an upsale to a more expensive product isn't a gift. It's an
incentive, disguised as a gift.

Nor is a "free report" that leads to a sales letter a gift. Get
the terminology right and you'll avoid the negative feelings of
potential customers - and other business owners - who are smart
enough to know the difference.

3) Professionals follow up. They will try to be certain that
agreed upon situations are satisfactory. They will show you the
work you ordered - in its entirety. They will ask for - and
give - feed-back. They will also take negative feed-back under
consideration rather than assuming that it is an insult and
becoming defensive, or worse, downright belligerent.

4) A professional does what he or she agrees to do. And, it's
done on time. If a change is necessary, professionalism demands
that all parties involved are consulted and/or notified. If a
deadline can't be met, the same rules apply.

5) Professionals give legitimate guarantees. If we can't
guarantee our work, we have no place in the business world.
Guarantees need to mean something - even if they are
conditional. Promising work - then not getting it done in a
reasonable (or the agreed upon) amount of time is a legitimate
reason for the customer to ask for a refund.

6) The Pro doesn't say one thing and do something else. The
word of a professional truly is his, or her, bond. It's as good
as any contract and better than most that I've seen anywhere on
the Web.

Above all, the true professional is ethical
