In the online world, words are your biggest lever. Both
behind the scenes in your HTML code and meta tags, and in
the all-important text on your Web pages, 'words rule!'
Here's a look at how to use your all-important words to
maximum advantage.
Use Multiple, Specific Headlines
Headlines and subheadlines create immediate context when
a visitor is exploring your site. Make sure they can always
see at least one headline on the screen. Like magazine
index headlines, they are summaries of what is to come.
You can make these headlines specific by using your keywords.
When you tag headlines in your source code - such as <H1>,
<H2> or <H3> - they will be used by many search engines to
index your site.
Clearly Explain
People scan headlines to grasp meaning, and often to summarize
an entire block of text. That's why being enigmatic, cryptic,
or ironic is counterproductive and a waste of time. Be as clear
as you can (and you won't risk irritating your readers)!
Write Your Links as Headlines
Often people scan pages by jumping from one link to another.
Have you ever looked at your own site in this way? Linkwords
look very much like headlines, or highlighted words, and should
deliver your primary message. Be sure to use your keywords here
as well.
Use Bullets
Bullets are essential. They break up text copy and serve you as
mini-headlines with an entirely different look and feel. The
ideal length for a bulleted list is 3-5 items, which is probably
all most readers scanning can grasp. If your bulleted list is
too long, try combining several bullets into one.
Body Copy
Start every Web page with a summary or value proposition
describing the content on the rest of the page. This will help
you get better search engine rankings, and it makes your pages
easier to scan. Be sure to use your keywords in this 'opening
salvo'.
People can only read one screen of information at a time. If
you are looking at a screen shot of text on your Web page that
is one continuous paragraph, it's way too long. Short paragraphs
of 2-3 sentences apiece will serve you better, and each can have
its own subheadline.
Keep it short and simple.
Your site visitors want to understand, NOW, exactly what your
product or service can do for them. Don't use long sentences
when short ones will work, and don't use long words when short
ones will do. Write for results, rather than to impress.
Site readers are less patient today and their attention shifts
fast. This is why short copy blocks will serve you well,
highlighted by bullet points, keyword-rich links, and
subheadlines.

Surfing for pay this week:
I apologize for leaving off the link to Jotter, my
favorite of the litter from last week's "new to me"
group. I have my hours maxed on the system which was
not hard with a minimum of 15 hours. The downside is
at $0.50/hour and a $50 minimum for payment, a check
could take a while, unless you can gather some referrals
quickly. Still, I really liked what I saw, including
good results when checking the up to the minute stats
for this program. With so many programs having buggy
software, it was easy to max the hours and put it away
for next month. Hopefully, they will increase hours
and lower the payment minimum in months to come. That
should help you build a group more quickly. Jotter also
says that they can now support the latest NetScape browser

BePaid told me this week that the software is going to
be released to the public starting on the 15th. They
claim that there are about 800,000 members, so they are
handing out software on a first joined/first to get basis.
You should wait for an email telling you to come get it.
IF YOU insist on going to the site in the meantime, you
will simply slow things up. Being an AllAdvantage veteran,
I can tell that the CRUSH of folks trying to get that
software made it hard for those who really were in line to
download the ViewBar. Let's lay off the site, and hopefully
you and I will be able to play with this new program. I
am NOT predicting a payrate of $20-!20/hour for "active"
use, but I still think this one is one to watch.
Speaking of buggy software, mValue seems to be on track
to get its software's house in order. Over the weekend
they released a new version to fix what had been a big
disaster. The new version even has a light to indicate
active earning again. The stats seem to be a bit goofy
however at this time. I checked mine to see that I "had"
40 hours in. Great, except I know I do not have that in
yet. Like many of you, I had been waiting for improvements.
This may be a bug for those of us over the 250 referral
level. Be sure you check your browser compatibility. You
may need to upgrade what you are using to work with this
latest version, and it was a struggle to get the new
version downloaded. By the way, if you are waiting for news
on your prize, assuming you won at some level in the
referral contest, the word is that word is coming...I
would rather just get the check.
SurfingPrizes have their site back in order, so you can
start earning with them again, BUT you will need to get
the latest upgrade to the software. The previous one is
now obsolete.
CashSurfers should be watching their mailboxes for checks.
After a recent purge of thousands of bogus and multiple
accounts, they have released money that had been held up.
ItAddsUp is now paying for all levels and has released its
first post-beta software. They have also switched from cents
to points that are supposed be worth more than the $0.50/hour
originally planned. We will see.
Have you become a "finalist" in the JackPot game? Yes? Don't
get too excited ... yet. They will be drawing 5 names out of
50,000 to win a trip to New York and a chance to compete for
the million dollar prize. The runner-ups get $5000.
Utopiad spent its cash on its new site I guess, because there
is not much being handed to members. The current rate is about
$0.11/hour. Not impressive and not good for long term prospects.

I sometimes hear advertisers complain about their E-zine
ads, not bringing them the result they expected. Because
of this, they get disillusioned and give up this way of
advertising.
Let me tell you, they are wrong, because E-zine advertising
really does work.
I continually swap and pay for ads in several E-zines, and
this brings me a continuous flood of new subscribers/visitors.
You just have to be sure to place the right ads in front of the
right people. This is called targeted advertising, the most
effective way of promoting on the Internet today.
There are 3 kinds of E-zine ads.
-Standard ads.
In my experience, standard ads, put together in a special
section, do not work well. I also skip the classified ads
part when I get there, so forget about these ads when you
start an ad campaign. Standard ads will not pay off.
-Sponsor Ads.
Sponsor Ads are placed at the top of an E-zine, and they
bring in good results, so you should always try to get
these ads instead of Standard ads.
-Editor Recommendations.
I find this to be the best technique. You work out a deal with
an E-zine Publisher, where you ask him to recommend your
service in his editorial, and in return, you can do the same
for his/her service/product.
Most Publishers will be glad to do this. Just write them a
friendly letter, and explain exactly what you have in mind.
You can also set up a joint venture, and swap an ad in
each others welcome message. (You do have a welcome
message, do you?) Just put a few lines in it like below:

Most people will subscribe, because they are already in
a "subscription mood". I have several recommendation
ads running, and they work excellent!
-Note: If you are an E-zine Publisher yourself, remember
that placing ads in your newsletter is not just another way
to make fast money. Keep in mind to bring your readers
advertisements that are useful for them, so don't offer ads
for cat food in your "Doggie E-zine".
Nobody is interested in misplaced ads; your subscribers
will not take you seriously when you try to offer them things
they don't want, resulting in more unsubscriptions, and
your sponsors will have waisted their advertising dollars.
This lack of professionalism and concern can eventually
lead to the end of your on line publication, so don't get
blinded by the idea of making it fast to the "golden
mountains"...
Making money should never be considered as a priority for
an E-zine Publisher. Stay focused on your content, and you'll
grow. All the rest will come automatically...
It is your task as a publisher to keep your advertisers/sponsors
happy. They help you by supporting your publication, so threat
them like kings.
Doing this will reward you by repeat ad placements from
your advertisers. Your E-zine needs them as much as your
advertisers need your subscribers.
Keep this in mind when you place another round of ads.

Answers for the "Pro in Motion"
Q. I have now gone through, not one - but TWO "big name"
Internet Service Providers. These are companies who are
well-known off line and from whom I expected to receive
great service.
In one case I never received the free time I was offered to
subscribe to their service. I couldn't believe that this
company would break their word! In both instances, I found
myself receiving terrible service. Why can't I depend on
the reputations of companies online? (Greta)
A. One again, assumptions enter into the picture of the world
online. Some assumptions have been carried over from doing
business in the "outside world." They simply won't hold up
online.
For the Consumer:
Don't assume that a company is reputable because they are a huge
corporation which has expanded onto the Internet. Nothing could
be further from the truth.
Many corporate giants have added online service divisions.
Unfortunately, these divisions are rarely governed by the rules
which may govern other parts of the company. My experience had
been that they tend to take full advantage of this fact.
Don't assume that another business owner's recommendation will
be of any true value without checking it out, no matter what
kind of an expert they claim to be. They could easily be a
silent partner - or an affiliate. Look at the level of
professionalism exhibited by the company with whom you are
considering doing business!
Don't assume that working on the Internet gives any company
"special rights" to treat you unprofessionally. If they
"de-humanize" you, remember who is paying their bills and
salaries. You! Plenty of good, solid, and smaller online
companies will be willing to give you the respect you deserve as
a customer.
Assumptions online can be dangerous. Please treat each decision
as if you are starting at the beginning - with no prior
knowledge of the company.
